It’s a sad and harrowing sight, as the leader of the Smiling Critters has been imprisoned and tortured. But, what happened to DogDay in Poppy Playtime Chapter 3? It’s a complex question, and one we’ll answer down below. Let’s get into it, shall we?
***Major Story Spoilers Follow!***
What Happened to DogDay in Poppy Playtime?
When you first meet DogDay in his Bigger Bodies form, he’s found suspended by chains in a jail cell with his bottom half hewn from his body. Luckily, he’s still alive, though he does appear to be in pain due to his fatal wounds. Straightaway, he refers to you as “Poppy’s angel”. He then proceeds to plead with the player to “save us”, though it quickly becomes clear that “there is nothing left to save, not here.”
Further into DogDay’s chilling speech, he exposes the truth. Essentially, you’ve entered CatNap’s lair, who is one of the major antagonists within the horror series, along with the Prototype. Interestingly, it’s revealed that CatNap worships the Prototype like a god, and that those who tried to stop the Prototype’s evil plans suffered agonisingly painful fates, much like DogDay. DogDay then declares that he is the last remaining Smiling Critter, as those who didn’t follow the Prototype were deemed as heretics and murdered for not believing.
How Does DogDay Die?
Suddenly, the multitude of Mini Smiling Critters appear from all around and descend upon his body like a horde of ants. They crawl inside every orifice — his mouth, his eyes, and his wounded lower body — and devour him from the inside out. Moments later, the Mini Smiling Critters assume control of DogDay and begin chasing the player in a tense cat-and-mouse chase sequence. At the end of the pursuit, we hear DogDay’s scream, heavily implying that he’s died.
Ultimately, it’s an unsettling and deeply disturbing set-piece and an important piece of narrative exposition. In essence, it reveals how materially evil and wicked the Prototype, CatNap, and the Mini Smiling Critters are. It also helps emphasise how there’s clearly a split in loyalties within some of the toys in the Playcare. Evidently, some are actively trying to stop the malevolent Prototype monster. Still, judging by DogDay’s demise, it seems that the rebellion isn’t going too well.
And that brings us to the conclusion of our explainer on what happened to DogDay in Poppy Playtime Chapter 3. For more on the game, here’s what happened to Kissy Missy.
