Announced at the Big Bang live event on Dec. 2, Epic Games has ushered in a new era for the popular battle royale mega-hit. Yes, Lego Fortnite is making waves right now, but due to its seemingly out-of-the-blue release, players may be a little puzzled as to what it actually entails. So, for those wondering what Lego Fortnite actually is, we’re here to clarify things. Let’s do this!

What Is Fortnite Lego?

In essence, Lego Fortnite is a brand new free-to-play crafting and survival game that’s available within Fortnite. On the surface, it appears to be a pretty on-the-nose competitor to Microsoft and Mojang Games’ hugely successful create-’em-up, Minecraft. In fact, not only Lego Fortnite feature similar crafting, building, and survival mechanics, but it also boasts two very similar gameplay modes: Survival and Creative (known in-game as Sandbox).

As you may’ve already guessed, Lego Fortnite‘s gameplay centers around gathering materials, fending off hostile mobs, and building bases. Much like its inspiration, there’s even co-op, though Lego Fortnite ups the player limit by supporting up to seven friends, as opposed to just four in Minecraft. To access the new game mode, all you need to do is boot up Fortnite and tab over to the Lego Fortnite tile, and that’s it.

The partnership with Lego continues Epic Games’ MO of collaborating with uber-popular IP. Just a quick glance at the title’s history, and you’ll see other collaborations that range from Eminem, Mr Beast, and Spider-Man to Moon-Knight, Batman and Bruno Mars. Clearly, Lego is the next phase of the company’s savvy strategy, which will likely increase numbers for the younger demographic.

Interestingly, Lego Fortnite isn’t the only new game mode that Epic Games has up its sleeve. Rocket Racing, which is a collaboration with Rocket League, is coming on Dec. 8. Meanwhile, Fortnite Festival is launching on Dec. 9, which is a co-partnership with Rock Band and Guitar Hero‘s developer, Harmonix.
