Many Americans are barely getting by as is, and the rising monthly health insurance costs people report aren’t helping. Federal workers, once generally seen as ideal for insurance benefits, have also taken a hit, with plans rising by an average of 10.9%. Federal employee and Reddit user InTheFade29 isn’t happy with this change and feels as though they and plenty of others are getting scammed out of their paychecks.
In their post on r/fednews, InTheFade29 claims that “some of the past affordable plans are increasing as much as 35%.” OP argued that they aren’t making enough to justify the rising prices for their insurance, on top of the increased cost of living everyone’s been experiencing, regardless of sector. “When are Americans going to say enough is enough to the complete scam that the entire healthcare industry has become?” InTheFade29 exclaimed.
Federal Workers’ Insurance Costs Rise While Trump Plans for a Pay Freeze Next Year
These reported increases in insurance plans come as President Trump plans a civilian federal pay freeze in 2027. Needless to say, many federal workers will be on edge. Not only will they not make more money, but they will be forced to pay an average of roughly 11% more for their insurance. For instance, someone paying $200 a month now would need to pay $222; those facing a 35% increase, as InTheFade29 alleges, would pay $270 monthly.
The Federal News Network reports that the increased insurance costs for federal employees are due to factors such as “emphasizing increased usage in behavioral and mental healthcare and higher prescription drug spending.” The entire healthcare system is affected, and countless Americans have no choice but to pay more for plans that were once more affordable.
In InTheFade29’s r/fednews post, one government worker claims that they decided to go on their wife’s insurance plan “because it finally got to the point where the coverage was better AND it was significantly cheaper.” One person allegedly working in Foreign Service says theirs increased by an outrageous 54%. When asked if they would change, they responded, saying they’re “not in a position to” since it’s still the best offer they got. “I’m kinda stuck,” they wrote.
With the pay freeze looming over the horizon, many federal workers are questioning the benefits of their employment and whether it’s still worth it for the “benefits.” After all, how are people in any sector supposed to feel when their insurance monthly rates go up faster than they’re getting paid? It’s not surprising to see why people are outraged, panicking, or considering alternatives.
