What’s this? We have a fresh Bethesda RPG? Well, technically, Oblivion Remastered is an old game with a fresh coat of paint. But even if you’ve played it twenty years ago (ahem!), you might feel lost once you’ve stepped out of that sewer gate and into Cyrodiil’s bloom. The good news is that we have some recommendations on where you should go for a good start. You might want to visit them before you save the world or something.
“Free” Horse at the Chestnut Handy Stables
You don’t exactly need to walk around after the tutorial sewer, there’s fast travel available in the game right away. Also, you can get a horse even without Septims. Follow these instructions on where to go in Oblivion:
- Open the map and find the Chestnut Handy Stables (western gate of the Imperial City).
- Fast select the stables and fast travel there, then go inside the building.
- Talk to the Orc, Snak gra-Bura, tell her you need a horse right away. Insist that you’re armed.
- There’s a high chance she’ll give you a horse right away, don’t worry about the consequences.
It’s an old nag that’s slow and tough to maneuver, but it’s best not to look a gift horse in the mouth. It’s better than walking.
Powerful Mace in the Imperial City
For melee players, there’s a powerful mace named Calliben’s Grim Retort up for grabs after you complete the quest “Unfriendly Competition” in Imperial City. It can carry you for a good while. Here’s how to initiate the quest:
- Walk inside the Imperial City and look for a shop in the Market District (northeastern side).
- Ask around the shopkeepers in Imperial City for rumors.
- Keep asking until someone tells you about the “newly-opened shop.”
- Alternatively, speak with Thoronir in The Copious Coinpurse in the Market District.
Early Fireball in Skingrad
If you’re a mage, here’s how you can get a lovely and powerful early game spell for free:
- Go to Skingrad, look for the Mage Guild in the city (north side of town, near the Colovian Traders).
- Ask to enroll and or simply ask around from the mages, they’ll give you a weak Fireball spell as some kind of starter kit.
Nice Bow from a Monster Near Cheydinhal
If you don’t mind a bit of risk, and you’re aiming for a stealth archer playstyle early on, you can get the Frostwyrm Bow from a quest called “The Horror of Dive Rock” in Cheydinhal. Follow these instructions:
- Go to Cheydinhal, walk around near people until you hear banter about the “horror of Dive Rock.”
- Activate the quest, travel to Dive Rock.
- You’ll need to fight a challenging enemy, though nothing you can’t handle.
Good Armor & Weapons from the Fighters Guild
Last but not least, if you want some decent duds to go along with your shiny sticks, the Fighter’s Guild gives you access to them if you sign up and do their quests. The nearest and most convenient Fighters Guild should be in Chorrol (due north of the city tree).
Once you have all of them, feel free to lay waste to the Daedra in Kvatch. Do consider replacing some of these advantages once you’ve levelled up past 10, as you’ll surely find more powerful stuff if you know where to go in Oblivion.
