Whoopi Goldberg tenders apology for a culturally insensitive remark she made while moderating The View on Wednesday. Whoopi Goldberg’s Romani slur raised fury online as many believed she insulted a group of people.
However, the actress apologized, saying she didn’t mean to use the derogatory word. Find out why she used the word below.
Whoopi Goldberg Uses Romani Slur
In classic Whoopi Goldberg fashion, the iconic actress again stirred conversation online about her language.
Whoopi used a derogatory and racist term associated with the Romani people while hosting The View Wednesday, March 15. The EGOT winner used the word during a conversation about former President Donald Trump and actress Stormy Daniels.
Whoopi said some of Trump’s supporters “still believe that he got, you know, g**ed somehow in the election.”
Whoopi Goldberg’s Romani slur likely derives from the word “gypsy” and is considered derogatory towards people of Romani culture and heritage.
It has historically been used to denote when someone has “been cheated in some way.”

Whoopi Goldberg Tenders Apology For Insensitive Remark
Whoopi Goldberg tendered an apology for her insensitive remark on The View’s official Twitter account after the episode’s broadcast.
“When you’re a certain age, you use words that you know from when you were a kid or you remember saying, and that’s what I did today,” Whoopi said. “And I shouldn’t have.”
The Sister Act star continued, “I should have thought about it a little longer before I said it, but I didn’t. I should have said ‘cheated,’ and I used another word and I’m really, really sorry.”
Whoopi’s faux pas comes a year after ABC suspended her from The View for two weeks. Her suspension came after criticism for comments she made on the Holocaust. Whoopi said last January on the show that the Holocaust was not about race but man’s inhumanity to others. She apologized, but ABC News President Kim Godwin suspended her for two weeks.
Per USA Today, Jewish leaders criticized her statement, noting that Adolf Hitler referred to Jews as an inferior race. The Rat Race actress apologized online the night she made the remark and on the next day’s show.
Since Whoopi Goldberg tendered an apology, grace should be extended to her, especially since it was a mistake this time. Hopefully, the legendary actress won’t make any more faux pas on the daytime show.
