The Disney+ sequel series for Willow has taken a big step in rounding out its cast. Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, and Cailee Spaeny are in talks to star as the three female leads. The news comes via Deadline. The TV series serves as a sequel to the 1988 fantasy film of the same name.
These Willow casting choices have some high profile movies under their belts. Kellyman is perhaps best-known for playing Enfys Nest, the leader of the rebel Cloud Riders in Solo: A Star Wars Story. She will next appear in A24’s dark fantasy The Green Knight, which COVID-19 has caused to be delayed indefinitely. Bamber has appeared in movies like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Spaeny’s features include Pacific Rim: Uprising and The Craft: Legacy.
Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle will serve as showrunners for Willow. Kasdan also wrote the pilot, which John M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) will direct. The film’s original director, Ron Howard, and its writer, Bob Dolman, will produce with its original production company, Lucasfilm. Additionally, Disney+ ordered the project to series in July.
The Story Of Willow
1988’s Willow follows Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis), a farmer who reluctantly leads a ragtag group of heroes in saving a special child from a powerful queen bent on killing her. According to Deadline, the series is set years after the movie with Davis returning to the title role. While there isn’t much known about the show’s overall plot, casting information tells us how these three actresses fit in.
We know the Willow series will revolve around saving a kidnapped prince. Bamber is set to play Dove, a kitchen maid who proves herself as the “chosen one” before embarking on her journey. Spaeny will play Kit, the kidnapped prince’s twin sister. Kellyman will play Jade, Kit’s best friend and moral compass. Joining the team is a male similar to Val Kilmer’s character from the movie. This character is a thief and liar who joins the heroes in exchange for getting out of prison. However, there is no casting news for this character yet.
