With the final season of Game of Thrones not releasing until 2019, many fans have shifted their anticipation to George R.R. Martin’s upcoming sixth book of the epic fantasy series. Some fans hoped that we would see Winds of Winter in Summer of 2018 but most fans thought that was just wishful thinking.
Unfortunately, it has now been confirmed that Winds of Winter will not be releasing this year (via George R.R. Martin himself). In his blog, Martin stated that:
“No, winter is not coming… not in 2018, at least. You’re going to have to keep waiting for THE WINDS OF WINTER.”
Martin did go on to say that there will be new Game of Thrones material released this year with Fire & Blood. This book will be released November 20th but Martin did want to clarify some important details:
“I do want to stress… indeed, I want to shout… that FIRE & BLOOD is not a novel. This is not a traditional narrative and was never intended to be.”
“let’s call this one “imaginary history” instead. The essential point being the “history” part.”
What Fire & Blood will be is a prequel of sorts that will fill in some history of the Targaryen Kings of Westeros. There won’t be a “traditional narrative” but there will be “enough stories here for twenty novels” according to Martin. Hopefully, this new material will be enough to satisfy us until the final season of Game of Thrones starts in 2019 or the eventual release of Winds of Winter.
We are getting new Game of Thrones material this year but it’s not what we were expecting. What do you think about the postponement of Winds of Winter?
