Around two weeks ago, Wisconsin driver Makayla Starks was called the N-word on an oil change sticker from Kunes Buick GMC. The dealership claimed on a now-deleted Facebook post that “it was supposed to be a joke to a co-worker.” Needless to say, Starks didn’t take this joke lightly after multiple employees attempted to contact her and cover the situation by lying, according to Fox 6. A dealership in New York, Family Nissan, caught wind of the news and decided to gift Starks a new car free of charge.

“We were frustrated, we were upset,” said Family Nissan owner Ramzey Rizk, who was shocked by the news of how Kunes mistreated Starks. That said, the New York dealership decided to give Starks a free Nissan Leaf. “It wasn’t so much about giving her a car,” Rizk remarked. “It was about giving her an electric car that doesn’t need anymore oil changes ever again.” He is, of course, referring to how this incident unfolded as the result of the Kunes employee’s racial slur printed on an oil change sticker.
In an interview with WISN 12 News, Starks says that Kunes should “take full accountability for not only this incident, but subsequent attempts to made to cover this up.” Kunes has since claimed it fired the individual who printed the racist insult sticker and says that “there is no place for racism or discrimination within our dealership or community.” However, users on Reddit reacting to the news of Starks being called the N-word don’t believe Kunes to be a reputable business in the first place.
“[It’s] worse than normal dealerships,” remarks a commenter who bought a car from Kunes last year. “You can tell it’s full of sleazeballs.” Of all the cars one person bought at dealerships, “Kunes was by far the worst experience I’ve had,” they claim. “Kunes is a terrible place, and they do bad business,” chimes in another. “It’s quite common in dealerships to be racist,” generalizes a fourth. Whatever the case, it’s nice to hear Starks had a happy ending to all this drama, with no small thanks to Family Nissan’s generosity.
