This year marks two big milestones for the characters of Wolverine and Donald Duck. It is the former’s 90th anniversary as well as the latter’s 50th. So, Marvel is releasing a new What If…? one-shot to celebrate the iconic duo. Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine #1 brings the two characters together by introducing a Donald Duck with Wolverine’s mutant powers. The anniversary issue will also feature other reimagined Disney and Marvel mashups.
Celebrating Wolverine And Donald Duck
To honor such milestones for these fan-favorite characters, Marvel is putting together a grand story in this one-shot. This new amalgamation character will team up with other Marvel/Disney mashups for a grand adventure. That adventure is inspired by one of Wolverine’s greatest storylines, Old Man Logan. Along the way, the issue will revisit some of Logan’s other hits, like their time spent with the Weapon X Project and as a member of the uncanny X-Men.
Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine #1 comes from writer Luca Barbieri and artist Giada Perissinotto. It features several variant covers from artists like Peach Momoko and Ron Lim. The official synopsis from Marvel invites readers to the near future, where Pete-Skull has transformed Duckburg. Now, there are no more heroes to save the day. The future is left in the hands of Old Donald Duck, who has retired from hero work. Luckily, his pals Mickey-Hawkeye and Goofy-Hulk are ready to bring him out of retirement.
Two Angry Peas In A Pod
Writer Barbieri spoke on merging the two classic characters for this celebration. They shared that the fun is that both characters seem impossible to make coexist in the same universe. However, the two have very similar personalities. Both are hot-tempered and unlucky but hold onto their big hearts in the face of adversity. That is why this one-shot works.
Meanwhile, artist Perissinotto found that Logan’s sideburns actually look great on Donald Duck. In fact, they fit the characters perfectly. The angular Wolverine hairstyle fits well with the shaggier appearance of Donald Duck. Perhaps a grander metaphor for how the two characters mesh.
Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine #1 is on sale on 07/31.
