A woman in New York City went head-to-head with a taxi driver after allegedly refusing to pay for the service rendered. In a video posted on Reddit, a cab driver and a woman were seen fighting over a piece of luggage at the trunk of a cab. Surrounded by a crowd, the woman attempted to retrieve her belongings, but the cab driver blocked her from doing so.
As she struggled to get her property out of the car, she could be heard screaming, “Help!” repeatedly. “You have to pay your fare,” the man fired back, insisting that the woman needed to settle her bill. Without hesitation, the woman shot back, “No, he took me round the whole city.” Neither of them seemed ready to back down as the argument escalated into a physical tug-of-war, with the woman even threatening to call the police. A group of bystanders closely watched the scuffle unfold, but no one intervened despite her loud cries for help. Some urged her to pay up rather than fight.
The video has since gone viral and garnered mixed reactions from Redditors, with some supporting the customer and others believing she was at fault. The comment section was flooded as people shared their reactions. “White fatigue,” one user insinuated. Analyzing the woman’s behavior, another wrote, “Lol, this White woman energy don’t work in the city. Did you pay your fare, lmao?” This user questioned her audacity, writing:
“Did she say she’s gonna call the police after she basically committed theft? The man provided a service and she’s robbing him by not paying. One thing about NYC—they gonna tell you when you wrong.“
However, someone else offered a different take, writing, “If what she’s saying is true or false, he can’t withhold her property. Same way a restaurant can’t detain you for dine and dashing. They can only report you to the authorities. Any contact beyond that could lead to a lawsuit if the person knows what they’re doing.”
Another user weighed in on both sides, saying, “Yeah, this video could go either way. That lady could be nuts and trying to scam the driver, OR the driver could have literally taken her for a ride. Honestly, my money is on a scammy yellow cab.”
Insisting on hearing the full story, one commenter wrote, “I’d like to hear the whole story. Yellow taxis have been predatory recently—saying stuff like, ‘_destination is 35 dollars usually, I’ll take you there for 30,’ when it’s actually 12 bucks.”
While the cab driver claimed she didn’t pay her fare, the woman insisted that he had taken her around the city and charged her double. As of the time of writing, it remains unclear which side of the story is true or how the situation eventually ended.
