If one thing is true, it’s that republicans in charge typically don’t think of the children. In the case of North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, he has shown this over and over again. Through his anti-abortion legislation and criticism of healthcare that would jeopardize so many families, he clearly just doesn’t care. On top of that, he’s voted to cut healthcare for low-income children and, quite frankly, that’s just gross. Now, a woman who frequently calls out government officials is saying something about it.
In the midst of the government shutdown, U.S. citizens are clearly missing out. Now, many states are putting a halt to November SNAP benefits, which will keep families hungry. Why? According to Lime (@lime.accordian on TikTok), “Republicans have set up a false dichotomy where the only two options are starving people or removing their healthcare. They think we are too dumb to know that those aren’t the only two options and that this is absolutely a choice they are making.” She decided to make a call to Hoeven’s office so she could ask him about this and demand answers!
In her video, Lime calls Hoeven’s office and asks, “Which do you think is the more torturous method to kill children? Starving them to death or having them die of curable illnesses because the government took away their ability to afford healthcare?” There’s a pause and then she’s given the reply, “I’m not sure.”
Lime decides to school Hoeven’s office. She tells them that republicans are making a decision that is going to cost children and families everything. She said the two options ends in one final thing: Children will perish at the hands of republicans. The silence she gets in return is astounding and goes on for so long. Lime finally says after the longest silence ever, “Maybe consider looking for a new job.” You really can’t work for conservatives and feel good about what you’re doing. That is, of course, unless you also feel good about taking away from people in need.
As one person commented in response to Lime’s video, “Silent treatment is an abuse tactic. His personal take was apparent.” Another person replied with a clapping emoji and stated, “Make them as uncomfortable as possible at every turn!” At least his office is getting the message, even if they’re not doing anything to change it. People like Lime are making all the difference and putting it out there so that considerations can be made. This is how we elicit change.
