Wonder Woman 1984 is getting a very special release through HBO Max. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it very difficult for movie distributors and exhibitors alike. Many studios are having to find creative solutions when it comes to releasing their films. This is especially the case for big-budget productions looking to make a profit.
Despite several delays and no improvements on the pandemic front, Wonder Woman 1984 still planned to stick to its latest release date. Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO of WarnerMedia Studios and Network Group, spoke about the film’s Christmas release in October. Now, we know it is definitely making that date. However, it will now release on HBO Max as well as in theaters.
The news broke on Wednesday after a trailer appeared online showing the HBO Max release details. Soon after people noticed, the trailer disappeared, which points to an accidental early upload. Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins then confirmed the news, and the trailer was put back up. Following Jenkins’ confirmation, Sarnoff issued the following statement:
”As we navigate these unprecedented times, we’ve had to be innovative in keeping our businesses moving forward while continuing to super-serve our fans. This is an amazing film that really comes to life on the big screen, and, working with our partners in the exhibition community, we will provide that option to consumers in the U.S. where theaters are open. We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see WONDER WOMAN 1984 via our HBO Max platform.”
Wonder Woman 1984 will release in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day. It will debut in international markets theatrically on December 16th. It will only be available on HBO Max for a month. But it will come at no extra cost for subscribers.
