This year’s Hellfire Gala officially kicked off in Wednesday’s X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1. After all the fun of Comic Con, the annual event is meant to keep the festivities going with fun and fashion. However, this year’s annual congregation of mutantkind on Krakoa is a bit different. With the Fall of X rapidly approaching, there is a shadow hanging over the champagne at the gala. That impending doom wastes no time, as the Hellfire Gala barely begins before the bloodshed starts.
X-Men: Hellfire Gala
For the past three years, the Hellfire Gala has been a time of great joy for the mutants of Marvel, especially for the X-Men, who will announce the newest member joining their ranks. The newest member is chosen by a fan vote that lasted for a month or so at the beginning of this year. However, writer Gerry Duggan made this year’s event one to remember by sidelining the event with a surprise and deadly attack.
While the Fall of X officially starts rolling, the issue also features another highly anticipated Marvel event. Inside X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1 is an interlude for G.O.D.S. The new series, from Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti, is set to completely change how the Marvel Universe’s pantheon of Gods and creation is seen.
A Big Bang
Amid the coronation of the X-Men’s newest member, Krakoa is viciously attacked. As such, the nominees for the X-Men must band together and fight the incoming assault from Nimrod. With Laura Kinney’s Talon in the lead, Synch, Prodigy, Cannonball, Jubilee, Frenzy, and Dazzler join Juggernaut to be X-Men. However, not all these members make it out alive.
Everything Hickman has established since re-launching the X-Men seems to have been leading to this. The group known as Orchis has banded together to destroy the mutants they fear. This attack on the Hellfire Gala is all part of that plan…and seems successful. During the attack, Nimrod swarms in to quickly take out Frenzy, Jubilee, and Prodigy. Dazzler and Cannonball survive, but just barely, and Talon gets Synch out of danger. Then a faceoff between Juggernaut and Nimrod leaves the former defeated, though still alive.
This is just the beginning of the Fall of X, which is already wild.
