Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced fans to Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez. During an interview with Fandom, the actress weighed in on what’s next for her character in the MCU. As of now, she is uncertain of her future in the MCU as the leaders of the studio have not told her what their plans are for her.
It does put into question whether or not she is dodging questions she cannot answer. Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and Charlie Cox had tricked fans by acting like they were in the dark when plans were laid out for what was coming up for them in the franchise. It seems unlikely that Marvel has no plans for Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, who can punch holes, in reality, to hop into another universe. Since this saga is called the Multiverse Saga, surely she must have a moderate part in it.
“I can’t really ignore the fact that America’s powers are traveling the Multiverse and coincidentally, you know, the next chapter of the MCU is called The Multiverse Saga. I don’t know… But they haven’t told me anything. So I’m just gonna say ‘fingers crossed’ and just think that I could possibly be in that. And I’d be so happy with that, because that’s pretty insane.”
Xochitl Gomez unsure of America Chavez being in another MCU project
Xochitl Gomez ended her America Chavez debut in Kamar-Taj to learn the Mystic Arts with Wong. It can give the character growth and knowledge about her powers when or if we see her again. For the teenage actress, she finds it the perfect place for her character.
“I think she’ll learn some structure and discipline from Wong. And I’m glad that she’s spending time there to find a place where she truly feels like she belongs and kind of has a family.”
Entering the MCU in Doctor Strange as a fan meant that Xochitl Gomez, as America Chavez needed to be more than that. The actress reached out to fellow Marvel fan and newcomer Iman Vellani from Ms. Marvel. The two had dinner and bonded over their new stardom in the MCU and their love for the franchise.
“It’s so important to me that I actually got to form friendships with these people, and Iman is just the sweetest, cutest girl ever. I love her so much and having dinner with her just also made me feel like I had someone that I could relate to. And just also hearing her talk about all of her Marvel nerdiness, I loved it. Watching her, I was like, ‘I feel so comfortable with you.'”
With rumors of Young Avengers coming to fruition one day and the current setup for Avengers: Secret Wars, along with everything in between, there are plenty of places to see the actress reprise her role. For now, we will patiently wait as the next MCU projects are underway with I Am Groot (August 10), She-Hulk (August 17), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11).
