‘Y’all So Miserable lol’: Norwegian Woman in California Goes Viral Over American Small Talk Take

Some conversations cross continents

Victoria, a Norwegian living in Los Angeles, California, shot to internet fame after she posted a video about what it’s like adjusting to American small talk. In her clip, she reacts to a lively sidewalk exchange with a stranger, chatting about the weather, birds, even local animals, stuff that felt totally foreign to her at first. It took off on Reddit, and soon people were weighing in on why Americans love casual conversation and how it compares to European norms.

The video spread quickly on Reddit, especially among communities that love to talk about life as an expat or cultural quirks. The comments came flooding in, hundreds from Americans, Europeans, and other expats, each sharing their own take on American friendliness and those everyday chit-chats.

In the popular video, Victoria tries to recreate a quick, casual chat she had with an American stranger. They exchanged some friendly words about the weather and animals, just the usual stuff that most Americans don’t even notice. But for Victoria, it was a surprise.

The video doesn’t say exactly where in California they were. Victoria hasn’t shared her last name; all people know is that she is Norwegian. The clip appears to have been posted to TikTok before spreading to Reddit, where it gained the most significant engagement.

Internet Reacts to Norwegian Woman’s California Small Talk Moment

Reactions on Reddit were largely lighthearted and divided along cultural lines. Some American users pushed back on the premise entirely, with one writing “Y’all so miserable lol” in response to Europeans finding small talk unusual.

Others defended American friendliness enthusiastically, arguing, “honestly, them being quite chatty is one of the best characteristics of Americans — you need to be pretty miserable to get upset with friendly small talk.”

One commenter offered a dry European counterpoint, joking that Europeans prefer to sit down with strangers and immediately launch into detailed historical discussions.

Not all European commenters agreed with the premise of the video, as one wrote, “I’m European and I miss small talk from when I was living in Canada and the US. It made my day. I met people this way, got invited to BBQs, concerts, got departure gifts from the coffee shop owner across my office on my last day. I’m tired of fellow Europeans feeling superior to this.”

People are connecting with this clip because it dives right into the always-heated debate about American and European social habits. There’s no obvious answer here, and everyone has a strong opinion. With loneliness and social isolation on everyone’s mind lately, seeing a video that highlights something as simple as chatting about the weather or birds really hits home for a lot of folks.
