Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine, posted a video to X announcing he is suspending his campaign operations. In the statement, Platner said his name might remain on the ballot for now but that “that ballot line belongs to the people of Maine.” The post, made days after a sexual assault allegation he has denied, has drawn strong reactions online, with many users criticizing his response and calling for him to exit the race.

The content was posted on X by the account @grahamformaine, associated with Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner. In the clip, which runs approximately 11 minutes, Platner speaks directly to the camera while addressing viewers. “We believe that for the movement to continue, it can’t be me,” he said. “And for that reason we are suspending campaign operations.” He continued, “This is incredibly difficult because I know that some will think it’s an admission of guilt, and it most certainly is not.”

The post text accompanying the video states, “My name might be on the ballot right now, but that ballot line belongs to the people of Maine.” Platner indicated in the footage that he intends to file paperwork to withdraw after confirming an open and democratic process for selecting a replacement. The footage does not show prior events leading to the announcement or any immediate responses from party officials. According to the poster and contemporaneous reports, the announcement follows recent sexual assault allegations that Platner has denied.

X Users Weigh In on Platner’s Maine Ballot Appeal

Some users urged him to continue despite perceived pressure from party figures. One commenter wrote: “Graham DO NOT LET THE ESTABLISHMENT PUSH YOU OUT. Hillary stole it from Bernie. Biden stole it from Bernie. Now they are going to steal it from you. Don’t let the oligarchs win!! Stay and fight!”

Another posted: “STAY AND FIGHT, GRAHAM! America is behind you.”

Other viewers criticized the announcement and Platner’s record. One stated: “You have done great harm to Maine and the progressive movement. Your chronic lies have damaged the trust. Thank you for withdrawing from the race, but you could have made a much bigger impact had you done it gracefully and with dignity.”

Additional comments rejected his framing of the decision, with one writing: “You are NOT the victim here, you rapist piece of *expletive*. Get off the *expletive* ballot!”

A further perspective highlighted party dynamics: “You have always been a disgusting person. The Democrats only dumped you because you were unelectable. Dems only care about power and not people. A *expletive* like you should be nowhere near the Senate, and every dem is stained by you.”

The announcement has added to the ongoing conversation around the Maine Senate race and the Democratic Party’s efforts to select a replacement nominee. Attention now centers on how the process will unfold in the competitive contest ahead of the November election.
