While it’s good to be confident, one staff member at a Utah hospital was a little too sure of themselves, so much so that they thought they knew better than the parent of a patient. According to Reddit user Affectionate_Beach45, she took her daughter to urgent care for a high fever. She filled out forms for her daughter before heading to a pharmacy to pick up some prescriptions. It was at the pharmacy that she realized her daughter’s information was recorded incorrectly, intentionally.
Confused, Affectionate_Beach called the prescribing clinic back, inquiring why her daughter’s name didn’t show correctly in their system. She was the one who wrote it down while at the urgent care, after all. To her shock, this was the staff’s response: “The nurse consults with an admin assistant, who tells her, ‘Oh, I just assumed the name was spelled wrong, so I entered it the way it should be spelled.’”
In other words, the mother wrote down her daughter’s name, but when the clinic’s admin typed it up into the system, they spelled it the way they thought it should be spelled, not what Affectionate_Beach put down. As a result, OP and her daughter weren’t able to initially get the prescribed medication. Needless to say, the mom wasn’t too pleased.
The Mother Was Furious at the Clinic’s Admin Support
“You think I misspelled my own child’s name?? And you didn’t think to confirm the spelling with me if you had doubts? We were sitting in the lobby for over an hour!” Affectionate_Beach angrily exclaimed. “The gall and entitlement of some people!” For reference, the mom explained how her daughter has a common name with an uncommon spelling, like “Katya vs. Kathy or Andres vs. Andrew.”
Whatever the case, the frustrating part of the story was how a random admin worker thought they knew better about a patient than the patient’s family, in this case, the mom. The post’s top commenter recalled how they experienced a similar incident, during which a worker claimed they were certain they input the correct birth date when they didn’t. “Imagine being so confident about someone’s birthday that you argue with the person who literally gave birth to them,” sighed a commenter.
Countless other people shared their own stories that involved a similar name predicament to Affectionate_Beach’s with her daughter. “Yeah that’s a hard no and an escalation to the practice manager because what the ever-loving-crap?” remarked a user. In the end, the mom says the clinic did end up fixing their mistake, but no one apologized for the trouble they put her through, not even the admin who was allegedly “just dumb and entitled.”
