A woman in Los Angeles, California, went out for lunch with her parents and vlogged it. She referred to her mother as an “emotionally immature parent,” and they showed apparent tense moments during lunch. The clip then went viral, but viewers chose to call her out instead.
Karina Reyes, a Los Angeles-based comedian, shared her lunch with her audience on TikTok. In just a few days, the clip went viral, garnering more than 600,000 views, 51,100 likes, and close to 500 comments.
From the get-go, the clip shows what Karina’s relationship with her mother looks like. She captioned the clip, “Dealing with an emotionally immature parent,” and said that her mother had agreed to the lunch because “she’s not gonna miss out on a free lunch.”
The family of three arrived at The Kickin’ Crab, and each of them ordered their respective meals. The clip shows Karina recording her mother’s shrimp order, with the California woman saying, “She didn’t say thank you, but we’ll see.” In a comment, Karina detailed that her mother doesn’t speak English.
Then, Karina said that her mother left the table after she told her to be more careful with her shrimp bag. According to her, the sauce was getting to Karina, and after her mother left, she is shown in the clip eating her shrimp.
“We could have avoided this if you just stayed home,” the California woman said. “I told my dad, ‘Next time when I ask you if it can just be us two, just let it be us too. That way we’re not dealing with these issues.’“
After paying for lunch, father and daughter left the restaurant. The clip shows Karina’s father looking for his wife, with Karina saying that she was “being crazy.”
Clip Goes Viral, Daughter Is Called Out
As the clip went viral, it prompted multiple reactions. Some viewers found Karina’s attitude rude, with one user saying, “You’re just like your mami.” Others were more understanding, but still concerned with her handling of the lunch, with one person asking, “Why do you hold so much resentment toward her?” Meanwhile, some focused their attention on the dad, with one commenting, “I think your behavior is stressing your dad out.”
The California woman’s clip depiction of tense family dynamics certainly led to many viewers interacting with the clip. Others, more aware of the nature of Karina’s relationship with her mother, understood where she was coming from, labeling her clip just another episode in what has become a series of TikToks of her interacting with her parents.
In her follow-up clips, Karina called those who called her mean “toxic people,” while also enjoying quality time with her father. To her, she was “enforcing boundaries,” and will continue to do so moving forward.
