Zack Snyder has had a fantastic 2021. Zack Snyder’s Justice League premiered on HBO Max in March and Army of the Dead premiered on Netflix in May. Army of the Dead became one of the most successful films on Netflix and there are plans to expand the universe in the future. Snyder has now revealed the official title for the sequel which is called Planet of the Dead.
In addition to Planet of the Dead, a prequel, Army of Thieves, is debuting on Netflix on October 29. Army of Thieves is directed by Matthias Schweighöfer who is also starring in the film as Dieter, the quirky, high-strung safecracker in Army of the Dead. This prequel will follow a previous adventure where Dieter joins a group of thieves to pull off a dangerous heist. Dieter’s story appeared to end in Army of the Dead but Snyder may still have other plans for him in the future.
“But the real adventure would be to see what happened to him when that safe door closed,” Snyder told Inverse. “Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left. I won’t tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 — aka Planet of the Dead — but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”
The end of Army of the Dead hinted at a potential sequel as Omari Hardwick’s Vanderohe survives but slowly begins to turn into a zombie on a plane after we see a bite mark. The next film could see the zombie outbreak spread to the rest of the world, hence the title Planet of the Dead.
In addition to a sequel and Army of Thieves, Snyder’s zombie universe is also getting an anime prequel series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. Outside of this universe, Snyder is also directing Rebel Moon, a sci-fi adventure, for Netflix. Snyder and Netflix have a strong relationship building and who knows how far it could go.
