Brian Cox’s Condemnation of the Bible on The Starting Line Podcast made him a target for aggrieved Christians. This week, the two-time Olivier Award winner shared his thoughts on everything from Donald Trump to religion, stoking the flames in the most delicate areas. One of his most controversial remarks targeted the Bible, the holy book for Christian believers. Expectedly, his attack offended a particular sect, who have now launched a counterattack on social media.
Brian Stokes the Flame of Religion
During his appearance on The Starting Line, Brian Cox claimed the Bible was one of the reasons the world have failed to move past the old ways and lean more towards matriarchy. According to him, the concept of religion, and the idea of “God” was only a means of controlling humans.
The problem with that, he explained, is that the concept, which is slowly engraved into our subconscious, glorifies patriarchy. With so many Bible stories subjecting women to lesser roles, it becomes increasingly difficult to evolve from patriarchal belief systems. Sounding off on religion, Brian Cox explained,
“They’re not dealing with who we are, we’re dealing with, ‘Oh if God says this and God does that,’ and you go, ‘Well what is God?’ We’ve created that idea of God, and we’ve created it as a control issue, and it’s also a patriarchal issue… and it’s essentially patriarchal. We haven’t given enough scope to the matriarchy.”
The Succession actor cited the Christian religion in his interview, explaining how patriarchal ideals have been shaped right from the first story of Adam and Eve. Brian Cox condemned the idea that Eve was created from Adam’s ribs, noting that Christians only believe the story because they are “stupid enough.” He quipped,
“It’s Adam and Eve. I mean the propaganda goes right way back – the Bible is one of the worst books ever, for me, from my point of view.”
Despite his opinions of the Bible, Brian Cox, an atheist clarified that he had no issues with religious people embracing the holy book. However, he added, no one needed to be told lies just to conform to a certain way of life. He divulged,
“They need some kind of truth, and that is not the truth. It is not the truth, it’s a mythology you know… it’s not really to do with what women understand more than anybody.”
Brian Cox Under Fire Following Demeaning Remarks About the Bible
Regardless of his feeble attempt to be unbiased, Christians and other religious people took offence to Brian Cox’s bashful comments about the Bible. Reacting to the interview on YouTube, one user fired,
“Oh, wow! A Baby Boomer has everything on Earth figured out. What a surprise! It’s a shame he didn’t tell everybody until now.”
Another shot back,
“This dude is hella pathetic. Lol.”
Redditors also joined the onslaught against Brian Cox, criticising his “misguided opinions of the Bible and Christians. One wrote,
“Tired of this safe-edgy Christianity bashing as an atheist. If he said the same about the Quran he would be lynched lol.”
Another agreed, chiming in,
“Why not the Quran and the Torah too, why single out one book.”
A third Reddit user commented,
“My top criticism of him is that he not only has an inflated ego, but he seems to cut others down in an effort to maintain inflation.”
A fourth wrote,
“Bro has to be rage-baiting at this point.”
This isn’t the first time Brian Cox has come under fire for his mostly controversial views. The actor has been known to criticize everything, from movie plots and cast to character interpretation and even the royal family. One more critical opinion shouldn’t matter, right?
