Hello all; Shelby here, the Nerd Stash’s horror guru. While I’m hoping your Halloween season has already been full of thrills and chills, the season isn’t quite over yet! Need something to fill your creepy evenings? Then check out our list below on some of the best horror movies you can find on your favorite streaming service! Horror classics (Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, etc) are always a good choice, but I will focus on some more modern thrills.
Raw is a French horror film and definitely not for the faint of heart. However, it is a fantastic, unsettling film. After eating meat for the first time in her life, Justine, a new vet student, develops a new kind of craving altogether.
This. movie. is. terrifying. Having a night to myself, I decided to turn off all of the lights and finally decided to check out It Follows. Needless to say, the lights came back on rather quickly. This film depicts a group of teenagers trying to outrun a sexually transmitted curse that never stops stalking you.
I will be completely honest; I absolutely love this movie. After a man hires a filmmaker, Aaron, to make a movie for his unborn son, things quickly begin to get out of hand. This is truly a hidden gem in the found footage genre and one that will keep you guessing!
One of the things that makes films like Hush or Creep so scary is that they could actually happen. Hush is about a deaf author’s fight for survival as masked intruders try to make their way into her isolated cabin.
Honorable Mentions: The Houses October Built, The Babadook, The Invitation, Gerald’s Game, Clown
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
If you need a way to calm down after watching some of the horror movies listed above, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is a great way to give yourself a break. Much like Shaun of the Dead, this is one of my favorite comedic horror films, and you just can’t help but love Tucker and Dale!
The Blair Witch Project
This was one of the very first horror movies that scarred me as a child. The woods around my childhood home terrified me for years after watching The Blair Witch Project. It probably didn’t help that a lot of people were convinced it was real at the time. However, fair warning, don’t bother with the sequels or the remake.
Jeepers Creepers is another film that came highly recommended by more than one of us here at The Nerd Stash. It is a classic, but I’ve run into enough people who have never seen it to justify it being on this list. If the movie doesn’t, its theme will surely haunt you for weeks.
This is one of my all-time favorite “scary” documentaries. From the man who brought us Cropsey, Killer Legends takes a look at the true stories that sparked some of our biggest urban legends. These tales of real-life horror stories will keep you up late into the night!
Honorable Mentions: Cropsey, Knock Knock, Light’s Out, VHS, The Bay, They Look Like People
If you can get past the old English, this is a fantastic horror film. It brings the fear and uncertainty of the witch trials to our modern era in a way never really seen before. Young Thomasin is accused of being a witch by her very own family as their simple lives spiral out of control.
Maybe you’re looking for something a little less serious, something you can make fun of while gobbling down your Halloween candy. If you are one of those that enjoy bad horror movies, Venom is the perfect choice!
I’ll be honest, I haven’t actually watched this one yet. However, I’ve heard plenty of good things. And who doesn’t want to listen to Sir Patrick Stewart for an hour and a half?
Honorable Mentions: Pet Semetary, The Last Exorcism, The Town the Dreaded Sundown
