In Palworld, you don’t want to be that little pig when the big bad wolf comes huffing and puffing (though it’s usually a stray Mammorest). And while you could build bases out of wood and stone and not straw, you’re going to need some finesse so those walls and roofs don’t come crashing down your sleeping Pals. That’s why we’re here, to impart some advanced base-building tips in Palworld that you probably would have wanted earlier to avoid your boxy base.
Avoid High Multi-floor Bases for Now
Palworld’s A.I. leaves a lot to be desired, though that’s understandable since it’s still in early access. Hence, the optimal mode for building bases is to build large and wide. Ideally, you’d want to keep your base single-story or two-story at most.
That’s because Pal pathfinding A.I. doesn’t handle multiple floors well, especially if they keep moving around or if you put the Pal Beds too high. This will hopefully change in the future once the Pal pathfinding improves, but if you want fewer base-building-related headaches, avoid building a Burj Khalifa in your base.
Build Multiple Bases For Each Crucial Resource
While we recommend building wide and shallow in Palworld, there’s a limit to that. Trying to fit everything in one base, from ore mining operations to wood cutting and even plantations, is not going to go well in the long run. Pals will start bumping into each other and clipping, and those with overlapping work suitabilities will get confused.
So, build dedicated bases for the most crucial resources. Again, this is something related to the Pal A.I. But even without that issue, having multiple bases still works well if a stray Pal raids your base. The game’s generous with fast travel anyway; just manage your encumbrance mindfully.
Start With Tech Essentials
Unlocking just about anything you want is a good way to lengthen your grind in Palworld. You don’t need all those Saddles and all those bows. What you need are the essential structures to keep your bases afloat and to outrace other players if you’re in multiplayer.
We have a guide here for which tech is essential to unlock or prioritize in the early game for a smoother start. Once you have them, only then can you maybe splurge a bit on the Saddles and other shiny stuff in the Technology tree.
You Can Use Foundations for Temporary Support
For more advanced base building and to make your bases look more aesthetically pleasing, you can use the foundation structures as scaffolding. Roofs only have to be connected to them via a single point, and once you have any suspended structure built, you can delete the unwanted or unnecessary foundations below them.
This applies to both wood and stone foundations in Palworld. You can even put a roof over your base this way if you want to prevent other players from griefing you or taking a peek from above and then luring violent Pals into your base. It’s not a problem in single-player, but you can get creative with base building this way nonetheless.
You Can Stack Walls Really High
It might take a while for you to unlock castle walls or to be able to build them. In the meantime, you can resort to structure walls. You can actually stack them as high as three mountains (in-game) as long as you can reach the top. This way, you can build some truly magnificent structures, especially those with suspended roofing.
In other cases, you can also use these high walls as makeshift ladders as long as your character doesn’t run out of stamina. The high walls can also help a lot if you have larger Pals since you can accommodate them better without having them clip through everything.
Try to Use Stone as Much as Possible
When building your base in Palworld, you’ll initially start out with wood, but you’ll want to replace everything with stone as soon as possible. Because if you’re unlucky, some Fire-based Pals will raid your base and remind you of what’s flammable or not.
Beyond that, wood structures generally have less durability or HP compared to stone or even metal structures. They won’t spread fire as easily, too, and will lower the chances of your Pals dying in a house fire while you’re away.
Have Some Water-Based Pals
In certain cases, such as earlier in the game, it can’t be helped; wood structures might be the only ones you can afford. Some countermeasures are in order, and here’s where Water-based Pals come in handy. Consider them as essential in our advanced base-building tips in Palworld.
As long as you can’t or haven’t made the shift yet to stone structures and are still limited to wood, you need to incorporate at least one Water-based Pal in each base. A simple Fuack Pal or even a Pengullet will do. You can find both of them near the starting point.
The Blue Base Circle Only Needs to Touch Buildings
Sounds like a weird base-building tip in Palworld, but this is to your advantage. The blue circle determines which buildings will work and won’t decay. However, it can feel too small at times. You’ll be pleased to know that a whole structure doesn’t need to be fully inside the circle.
As long as the circle touches at least half of the structure, it’s still considered as inside the limitation. Now you can have more freedom with walls. Additionally, this knowledge can slightly impact the way you position your Palbox, seeing as the circle isn’t that strict.
Spread Out Your Food Baskets & Storage Boxes
Here’s another advanced base-building tip for Palworld that can help you alleviate some pathfinding-related issues. For many, a dedicated feeding area might be more aesthetically pleasing, but the Pals won’t appreciate it. You’ll need to spread out the Food Baskets to help their pathfinding.
Otherwise, be prepared to be puzzled at why some Pals aren’t eating despite the full Food Basket. The same goes for Storage Boxes. Scattering them all over your base should help your Pals transport resources better.
You Can Always Pack Up and Move
Don’t feel too much regret if you think you picked a sub-optimal base location. You can take all your Pals and your Palbox and then move. That’s not to say moving bases is cheap. You can’t take structures with you, only Pals.
You can then reassemble the disassembled Palbox in the new area, complete with all the worker and base Pals. You’ll need to rebuild everything, of course. But if things don’t work out, know that you can always move back to the old base (as long as the structures haven’t decayed).
