November is a weird time for new movie releases. As we wrap up the spooky season, theaters are still showing a decent selection of horror movies while getting ready for the inevitable slew of critically acclaimed films to set up awards season. That said, there’s a decent selection of different movies to look forward to this November. So, if you’re a fan of war films, superhero adventures, horror movies, or biopics, here are 10 movies you can look forward to coming in November 2023.
Priscilla
A biopic focusing on Priscilla Presley and her relationship with Elvis is set to release on November 3, 2023. Written and directed by Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation), Priscilla is based on the memoir Elvis and Me, which was written by Priscilla Presley, who also serves as executive producer.
It stars Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim Uprising, The Craft: Legacy) as Priscilla and Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, The Kissing Booth) as Elvis. While Dagmara Domińczyk (The Count of Monte Cristo, Succession) plays Priscilla’s mother, Ann Beaulieu. The film already premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, where it received good reviews, with 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Dream Scenario
Nicolas Cage (National Treasure, Face/Off) has been having a bit of a great run, and it seems like he’s continuing it with Dream Scenario which is coming to theaters on November 10, 2023. Produced by A24 and written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself), it is a comedy that follows a professor whose life changes after he appears in everyone’s dreams one night.
Dream Scenario also stars Julianne Nicholson (August: Osage County, I, Tonya), Michael Cera (Superbad, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Dylan Gelula (Chasing Life, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Dylan Baker (Spider-Man, Selma), and Tim Meadows (Mean Girls, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping). The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, and it received good reviews. It currently sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Marvels
The latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to be released on November 10, 2023. The Marvels was directed by Nia DiCosta (Candyman, Little Woods) and it is the third and last MCU movie to come out in 2023. A sequel to Captain Marvel, The Marvels won’t just continue Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) story, as she will be joined by both Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). Both characters were introduced in the Disney Plus Marvel shows, debuting in WandaVision and Ms. Marvel respectively.
Samuel L. Jackson also returns as Nick Fury, after his lead role in Secret Invasion earlier this year. The Marvels follows the trio of heroes as they realize that their powers are linked. If any of them use their powers they switch places with one of the others. Zawe Ashton (Velvet Buzzsaw, Nocturnal Animals) plays the villain Dar-Benn, who is a Kree warrior at odds with our heroes.
It’s a Wonderful Knife
If October didn’t fill your horror movie quota for the year, November might have you covered. It’s a Wonderful Knife is a take on the James Stewart classic It’s a Wonderful Life but with a slasher twist. The movie is slated to be released on November 10, 2023, and it was directed by Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls). Jane Widdop (Yellowjackets) is playing the main role, Winnie Carruthers.
It’s a Wonderful Knife also stars Joel McHale (Community, The Soup) and Justin Long (Barbarian, Jeepers Creepers). The plot of the film sees Winnie Carruthers wish that she’d never been born a year after she had saved her town from a serial killer. The wish comes true and she is transported to an alternate world where she doesn’t exist, accidentally leaving the killer free to kill again. Who wouldn’t like Christmas with a bloody twist?
Thanksgiving
Speaking of horror and the holidays, Thanksgiving is set to release on November 17, 2023. Fans of Grindhouse might remember Thanksgiving as one of the fake film trailers that was made for the movie. Director Eli Roth, who made the original trailer, is also directing the feature film. The film follows a killer named John Carver who terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts, carving them up for the ultimate Thanksgiving dinner.
Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy, Enchanted) plays the sheriff, and he is joined by Rick Hoffman (Suits, Billions), Karen Cliche (Saw VI, Mutant X), Milo Manheim (Zombies 3), Nell Verlaque (Big Shot), Gina Gershon (Showgirls, Riverdale), and Addison Rae. We don’t know if the movie will be as bonkers as the Grindhouse trailer, but based on the new trailer above, it looks like it might stand tall with the rest of the great horror movies released in 2023.
Next Goal Wins
A biographical sports comedy is coming to your screens soon, with Next Goal Wins set to come out on November 17, 2023. Directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok), the film stars Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, Shame) as a Dutch-American football coach named Thomas Rongen, who is tasked with turning the American Samoa national football team into one of the world’s best. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
After nearly a decade since the last one, a new movie in The Hunger Games franchise is coming this November. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is a prequel to the original film, and it will be released on November 17, 2023. It is based on the book of the same name which was written by franchise creator Suzanne Collins and released in 2020. The movie was directed by Francis Lawrence, who has directed all but the first movie in the franchise.
The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes follows Coriolanus Snow – played by Donald Sutherland in the original films – who is played by Tom Blyth (Scott and Sid, Billy the Kid), and his relationship with the tribute from District 12, Lucy Gray Baird, who is played by Rachel Zegler (West Side Story, Shazam! Fury of the Gods). The film also stars Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, X-Men: Days of Future Past), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore, Asteroid City), and Viola Davis (Fences, The Woman King).
Napoleon
The trailers are making it seem like Napoleon might be one of the biggest war films ever made. The movie will see a theatrical release on November 22, 2023, and it will go to Apple TV Plus sometime afterward. The Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator) film clocks in at 157 minutes, but he has stated that he intends to release a director’s cut on Apple TV that is over four hours long. It will follow French leader Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power, focusing on his relationship with his wife Joséphine Bonaparte.
Napoleon is played by Joaquin Phoenix (The Joker, Beau Is Afraid), while Joséphine is played by Vanessa Kirby (The Crown, Mission: Impossible – Fallout). The film also stars Tahar Rahim (A Prophet, The Past), Ben Miles (Andor, The Crown), Ludivine Sagnier (Lupin, The Young Pope), Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon, The Ritual), and Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding, Cemetery Man).
Wish
Disney’s next animated feature will be coming to theaters on November 22, 2023. Wish was directed by Chris Buck (Frozen, Frozen 2) and Fawn Veerasunthorn. One of the writers of the film was Jennifer Lee, who also wrote Frozen and Zootopia. It follows a girl named Asha in the Kingdom of Rosas, who feels an evil emanating from the King that nobody else seems to. Desperate, she makes a wish upon a star only to find that the wish comes true.
Asha is played by Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Schmigadoon!), while King Magnifico is played by Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman). There is also a talking goat named Valentino, who is voiced by Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Firefly). Wish also features Victor Garber (Alias, Titanic), Evan Peters (X-Men: Days of Future Past, American Horror Story), Harvey Guillén (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, What We Do in the Shadows), and Angelique Cabral (Life in Pieces, Friends With Benefits). It is releasing shortly after Disney’s 100th anniversary which is in October.
Maestro
Maestro is a biopic focusing on the relationship between prolific composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born, The Hangover) is playing Bernstein, while Carey Mulligan (Shame, She Said) is playing Montealegre. Cooper also directed it, and he wrote it with Josh Singer (Spotlight, The West Wing). While Maestro is coming to Netflix on December 20, 2023, it will be having a limited release in theaters from November 22.
The film also stars Matt Bomer (White Collar, Magic Mike), Maya Hawke (Stranger Things, Do Revenge), Sarah Silverman (Wreck-It Ralph, The Sarah Silverman Program), and Michael Urie (Ugly Betty, The Decoy Bride). Maestro premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, and it is currently sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Of course, some of these release dates might shift as the SAG-AFTRA strike continues because the AMPTP won’t give the actors the deal they deserve.
