World War II happened decades ago, but now, people still remember it, especially with the jokes about WW3 happening. Not many survived the war, but an elder Minnesota man, who is 100 years old, is one of the few people who survived. He fought in the devastating Battle of Iwo Jima, and his survival is admirable. The Minnesota man was then honored while he was on a flight as people on the plane felt grateful for him and that he once fought for the country.
In the video, the Minnesota man’s granddaughter is filming him while the pilot is speaking in a mic and introducing him to the rest of the plane. He says:
“We don’t have royalty in the United States, but we sure have something pretty close and he’s sitting in row one. We have a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima on board. Gordy is a 100 years old. He landed on Iwo Jima on his 20th birthday.”
The pilot then asks for “a round of applause” for the 100-year-old Minnesota man who raised his hat in appreciation. As the pilot said, “If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be here.” His granddaughter also showed her appreciation in the caption as she wrote, “So honored and proud to call him my grandpa.” She said, “Im [sic] so lucky to have an extraordinary man like him in my life.”
People Reacting to the Video of the Minnesota Man
The fact that the Minnesota man is 100 years old and one of the last remaining survivors of this battle left a lot of people in awe. One person wrote, “100 years and Iwo Jima… he’s a walking history book and I cannot thank him enough for his service.” Another hinted at how horrific the Battle of Iwo Jima was. They wrote, “Being on Iwo Jima there’s no telling the horror that man saw and endured. I hope he’s been able to enjoy a peaceful life since his service God knows he deserves it.” The video went viral enough that it reached another person whose grandpa is also a survivor of the battle. They wrote:
“Your [sic] KIDDING!!! My grandpa just had his 100th birthday on February 17th!! He was also in the battle of Iwo Jima!!!! Alvin Thompson. I would love to know if they know each other ! Please get back to me.”
While the creator of the video hasn’t replied yet, it still is a nice coincidence. There was even a third person whose grandpa survived the battle. Aside from these reunions, some got emotional at the fact that the Minnesota man’s birthday was on the same day the battle started. It was February 19th. Even History channel chimed in and wrote, “Thank you for your service Gordy!” It is always an emotional experience when you see elder people who survived war like this Minnesota man. The fact that he got teary-eyed as well makes this video even more heartwarming. Thank you, Gordy!
