After her bariatric surgery, 1000-Lb Sisters star Tammy Slaton will have to undergo another surgery. Throughout her time on the series, Tammy’s weight loss journey suffered many hiccups. However, the reality star has stepped up her game in recent months after her stint at the rehab center. But she will now have to take more necessary steps in her weight loss journey.
Tammy Slaton’s 1000-Lb Sisters Journey
When fans met Tammy Slaton during season 1 of 1000-Lb Sisters, she weighed over 600 pounds and was nowhere near her weight-loss goals. Together with her sister Amy Slaton, they both weighed a combined 1000 lbs. However, it didn’t take long before Amy dropped enough weight to qualify for bariatric surgery. Her progress left elder sister Tammy feeling isolated on the show.
For much of the series, Tammy struggled with her weight-loss journey and even added more weight — peaking at an outrageous 717 lbs. At this point, she was nearly bedridden and hanging on for dear life. However, after barely surviving a health scare at the end of season 3, Tammy knew she had to make some radical changes if she wanted to keep living.
Tammy spent the better part of season 4 in a rehab facility in Ohio, and by the summer of 2022, she had lost enough weight to undergo bariatric surgery successfully. Since then, she has lost over 300 pounds and is having some sort of rebirth. More recently, Tammy excited fans when she shared a picture of herself looking slim and standing unaided.
Despite her remarkable success, Tammy is determined not to rest on her oars. She has been considering several options to help her look better, and it was recently reported that she has now decided to undergo another major procedure. The surgery will serve as the necessary step in Tammy’s weight loss journey. Here is all you need to know about Tammy’s new surgery.
Tammy’s Upcoming Surgery Is Quite Expensive
Since her time in the Ohio-based rehab center, Tammy has lost over 300 pounds, which has left excessive saggy skin all over her body, especially around her neck. This has understandably been a source of concern for Tammy, who is said to have been weighing several options to help her improve her looks over the last few months.
Last month, The Sun reported that Tammy is preparing to undergo another major surgery. The surgery will involve doctors removing excess skin around her body, inadvertently leading to Tammy losing more weight. However, the 11-hour procedure will be costly as the reality star would have to fork over $85k for the surgery. On the bright side, it would relieve her of a massive burden and give her a chance at everyday life.
One of the areas of her body where her saggy skin is the most visible is her neck. Tammy’s weight loss helped her to achieve a much slimmer face, but it also meant the skin under her neck dropped spectacularly. During an exclusive interview with The Sun, Dr. Richard Westreich revealed that this is quite common amongst weight-loss surgery patients, albeit there is some hope for Tammy in the form of plastic surgery. However, the surgery will come at a steep price for the 1000-Lb Sisters star.
Considering that she doesn’t have a source of income bar her 1000-Lb Sisters’ TLC deal, Tammy might need financial aid. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be the first time the sisters would ask fans for donations. In 2015, Amy opened a GoFundMe to pay for a triple-sized coffin for Tammy, who was hospitalized. However, the pair have come a long way since then.
1000-Lb Sisters’ Tammy Cannot Afford To Relapse
One of the after-effects of Tammy’s bariatric surgery is an excess of saggy skin. Saggy skin caused by rapid weight loss, which is particularly common amongst patients that undergo surgery, results from the skin stretching beyond its limit to accommodate a person’s excessive weight. When someone loses weight, the skin may not fully shrink, resulting in saggy skin due to an incomplete cycle of shrinkage.
During the interview, Dr. Richard Westreich, a plastic surgeon, explained that Tammy’s surgery would involve carefully cutting off the excess skin around her body. The procedure is quite risky and requires an excellent level of skill, hence the hefty price tag. However, the plastic surgeon warned that it would all be a waste if Tammy relapsed. This is because the skin would stretch again, and she would return to where she started.
This has left fans fearing for Tammy due to her worrying lack of discipline. Throughout her weight-loss journey, Tammy struggled to achieve her goals. Tammy’s inability to control her food addiction and other poor health habits hindered her progress. This is highlighted by the fact that she had to undergo two rehab stays before she could finally undergo bariatric surgery in June 2022.
Even after going through all that trouble, Tammy didn’t take long to revert to her old habits. She was spotted leaving McDonald’s and, more recently, vaping during a shopping trip to Walmart. She also bought Twinkies and other treats. Nonetheless, recent pictures have shown Tammy’s weight loss progression. However, behind all the vaping, Tammy seems committed to losing weight and hasn’t shown any regression. Hopefully, the 1000-Lb Sisters will keep this rare form of discipline.
1000-Lb Sisters’ Tammy Might Need A Plastic Surgery
In some of Tammy’s more recent social media videos, especially on TikTok, it has been impossible to ignore the sizeable droopy skin around her neck. While a skin tightening procedure is usually the first point of call for most weight-loss patients, sadly for Tammy, this wouldn’t be of much help in her case.
Over the years, Tammy’s excessive weight gain has stretched her skin to its limits. The 1000-Lb Sisters star would need to employ more drastic measures to fix it. Dr. Richard revealed that people who have lost over 300 pounds quickly, like the Slaton sisters, would require a face or neck lift and other expensive surgeries to cut the excess skin around their bodies. He noted,
“Most patients like Tammy would probably get a lot of issues with the arms and the lower abdomen. She would have issues with the legs – with the skin above the knees. Usual skin tightening procedures wouldn’t work in these instances.”
However, Tammy’s recently closed trachea poses a significant health risk to any surgery around her neck. Although the reality star no longer requires a tube to help her breathe. However, the hole has not completely healed and can be easily infected during any procedure, such as a neck lift.
There are more than enough risks associated with Tammy’s new surgery, albeit the rewards far outweigh them. Still, it is best she treads carefully and considers all the variables before making a final decision. Besides the vast amount of money involved, it is pertinent that she does only what is beneficial to her health.
1000-Lb Sisters fans have followed Tammy’s weight loss progression over the years, and the surgery is another step forward for her. After more than three years since she showed up on the screens, Tammy is finally reaching her goals. However, some minor hurdles still exist for the 1000-Lb Sisters star to overcome.
