With the pinnacle of award season is almost upon us, the 88th Academy Awards have been revealed. While there are some noticeable “snubs” for a few Oscar Nominations, overall it seems like this will be a fairly competitive year for the coveted award. Leading the charge with a whopping twelve different nominations is director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film The Revenant. Following close behind with ten nominations is our pick for best picture, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Other notable films that received a fair amount of nominations is The Martian with seven, Bridge of Spies with six, and The Big Short with five. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was nominated for a few production based awards, though if it will win an Oscar against the likes of Mad Max and Ex Machina is up for debate.
Some noticeable exclusions from this year’s Oscars include Idris Elba for his role as the Commandant in Beast of No Name and Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton. Both of these men could have easily been nominated for best supporting actor, so seeing them off the list is a bit disheartening. It would have also been nice to see Will Smith get a nod for Best Actor in his film Concussion as that was easily one of Smith’s best performances in recent memory. That being said, this year’s Oscar Nominations offers a promising field! Check out the list of nominations below!
