Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz took to the stage to announce the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards, and while Barbie is up for multiple Oscars like Best Picture, the highest-grossing film of 2023 is missing from some of the categories. Margot Robbie missed out on the nomination for Best Actress, and Greta Gerwig wasn’t nominated for Best Director.
Weirdly enough, Ryan Gosling did make the cut for Best Supporting Actor, as did America Ferrera for Best Supporting Actress. While she wasn’t nominated for her directing, both Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
While Barbie might have come up short in some categories, it still managed to earn eight Oscar nominations. However, Oppenheimer – the other half of Barbenheimer – did lead the pack, managing to take home the most nominations with a total of 13.
Christopher Nolan has been nominated for Best Director, while both Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt have scored their first Oscar nominations for their roles in the film. Robert Downey Jr. is in the running for Best Supporting Actor as well. Oppenheimer is also up for Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
Coming up behind Oppenheimer in nominations is Poor Things, which managed to secure a total of 11, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon which received 10. Other notable omissions from the nominations list include Past Lives, which only received nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay with no nod for Greta Lee, and Leonardo DiCaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon.
Another major snub is Ferrari, which should have at least gotten a nod for Best Editing or Penélope Cruz’s stellar performance. You can watch the winners get their awards when the 2024 Oscars air on March 10, 2024, on ABC, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
