This year has already given us many incredible horror games, including Silent Hill 2 and Killer Klowns From Outer Space. However, it wouldn’t be Halloween if we didn’t acknowledge the other incredible horror games coming up this year. There are still two months in 2024 and a whole lineup of spine-tingling games to look forward to. Without further ado, let’s go over five of the most terrifying upcoming horror games!
Slitterhead
I’m personally most excited about Slitterhead. Spearheaded by Bokeh Game Studio, it is a love letter to Gravity Rush and the Siren franchise of horror games from the early 2000s. If that doesn’t make sense, then maybe the context you’re missing is that Keiichirō Toyama, the creator of those franchises, runs Bokeh Studio. The game takes place in the 90s and follows an entity named Hyoki who must eradicate monsters known as Slitterheads who are eating humans.
Slitterhead is available on November 8, 2024, for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
There have been various reasons why S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been delayed as long as it has. But now, we can expect to roam the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone later next month. You take on the role of a survivor in an open-world, radioactive zone. You’ll encounter various mutants, strange artifacts, and terrifying anomalies while uncovering a branching story.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl spreads horror on November 20, 2024, for PC and Xbox.
Infestation: Origins
Now that the Steamboat Mickey version of Mickey Mouse is part of the public domain, we should expect to see him pop up every so often. Unlike the above games on this list, Infestation: Origins is a four-player co-op experience where you and up to three friends are responsible for exterminating some serious infestations. You’ll encounter various urban legends and folk myths alongside classic characters when it finally does release.
The Steam page does not have an official launch date, but Infestation: Origins will be released into early access sometime this month.
No More Room in Hell 2
No More Room in Hell 2 is an upcoming horror game that is expected to hit early access later this year. Instead of up to three other people, you and seven friends are challenged with fighting through hordes of zombies across a massive map. This game is so interesting because you can approach hordes in various ways using your wits or muscles. You can literally get to the main objective by fighting or using your brain to get around. Another aspect is the permadeath, making every decision worth considering before implementing. It’s expected to be endlessly replayable and a special treat for horror movie fans.
You can play No More Room in Hell 2 with your friends on October 22, 2024, on Steam.
The Axis Unseen
The Axis Unseen is a little different from the above games and is incredibly unique. It has a heavy metal horror vibe and occurs in a nightmare world where you must survive against the enemies hunting you. You’ll encounter monsters from popular folklore and engage in bloody battles against a heavy metal and atmospheric soundtrack. It’s a completely open world adventure created by a single developer who also worked on Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76.
Hunt monsters of lore in The Axis Unseen on October 22, 2024, for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Dark Hours
While it might not sound like an upcoming horror game, I assure you it is. Dark Hours lets you play with up to three people to try and pull off a heist that’s been interrupted by the supernatural. Now, not only are you a thief, but you’re a thief trapped with a ghost in an auction house filled with traps designed to catch burglars. You can try to escape or attempt to wait out the night until the break of dawn; it is your choice. The demo is available now, and when it is released, it will be available in early access.
Dark Hours will be available to play with your friends on October 24, 2024, for PC.
Psychopomp GOLD
Psychopomp was already released earlier this year, but the GOLD version has new levels, modes, additional secrets, and more. Honestly, I added it to this list because of how visually stunning it is and to outline my excitement for the new version! Psychopomp GOLD lets players explore labyrinthian catacombs to encounter horrifying monsters and engage in terrifying battles. The graphics are also a major departure from what we traditionally associate with horror games.
Psychopomp GOLD will be available on PC on October 25, 2024.
Path of Exile 2
The sequel to Path of Exile is finally coming upon us. You and five other players can engage in dungeon-crawling goodness and use your magic or might to demolish countless monsters and enemies. Players will be able to choose between 12 different classes and 36 Ascendancy Classes and take advantage of a new Skill Gem system. The story of Path of Exile 2 takes place many years after the first and offers a six-act campaign and all-new endgame.
If you’re a fan of intense boss enocunters and slaughter monster after monster in dungeons alongside your friends, then you can pick up Path of Exile 2 when it launches sometime in November of 2024 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead
Based on the popular movie franchise, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is an upcoming horror game set in a monster-filled world that you must traverse silently. It follows a protagonist separate from the films who must come to terms with her personal fears and interpersonal family conflicts. Unlike most horror games, sound is quite literally the difference between life and death as you leverage your surroundings to find the best way to escape and bypass the monsters.
You can check out A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead when it launches on October 17, 2024 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
DayZ Frostline
This entry isn’t necessarily a game, but it’s a DLC to a criticaly-acclaimed game. Frostline is a DLC that requires the base game to play, and takes place in a completely new area called Sakhal. Players will experience all-new terrain and a new winter landscape that asks more of you in tersm of survival. Alongside the gameplay content of the DLC, players will also be able to enjoy winter cosmetics and an all-new fishing mechanic.
DayZ Frostline will be available to play on PC on October 15, 2024.
