The new year means plenty of new video games. 2024 already has some solid additions for the horror genre lined up and set for release at some point during the year. These games cover a variety of subgenres within horror for players who like survival, puzzles, and even multiplayer experiences.
It’s worth noting that the gaming industry is notorious for changing release windows and dates and getting pushed back, sometimes even at the last second, so a game on this list doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll come out this year. Using all the available information, though, these are some of the safest bets for 2024’s upcoming horror games.
Toxic Commando
The horror legend John Carpenter (Director of films like The Fog, Halloween, and The Thing) is dipping his toe into horror gaming with a co-op zombie shooter that seems like it could finally be the new-gen Left 4 Dead successor that fans deserve. Everything from the creature designs to the shooting mechanics looks tuned to gory perfection based on the current trailer.
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is set to release sometime in 2024, although no more specific window has been given.
Alone in the Dark
The reimagining of the 1992 cult classic Alone in the Dark has done nothing but build hype in the horror gaming community the farther along it’s come in production. The most recent trailers, showing off Stranger Things actor David Harbour in some Lovecraftian early 20th-century environments with some terrifying monster designs, make it seem like this could be the defining survival horror title of the year.
Alone in the Dark is set to release on March 20th, 2024.
Little Nightmares 3
The eery puzzle game is getting its third entry this year with Little Nightmares 3. This is a franchise that most gamers interested in this type of content have almost certainly heard of if not played to death at this point. It’s an indie darling series with one of the most unique visual styles in the industry at the moment. In Little Nightmares 3, it looks like those environments are being pushed to an even more impressive, and simultaneously haunting, realm while the puzzles and story flow into each other seamlessly as the series has been known to do in the past.
Little Nightmares 3 is set to release sometime in 2024, although no more specific release window has been given.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Illfonic Games is back with yet another horror multiplayer title following up others like Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunting Grounds. Killer Klowns From Outer Space is a far more niche property to be adapting in this way, but it has a dedicated cult fanbase, and any horror fan can get into some murderous clown action regardless. Similar to other Illfonic titles in this vein, players can be either the Killer Klowns or the victims trying to survive their terrifying assault.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space is set to release sometime in 2024, although no more specific window has been given.
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Konami couldn’t keep holding out after seeing the massive success of all the recent Resident Evil remakes, so now Y2K-era horror gaming fans are getting another classic remake, this time for Silent Hill 2. The promotional material they’ve put out so far for this remake is already very exciting, it seems like they’re translating the eery, ambient, and disorienting environments of the PS1 original to modern visuals very well. Hopefully, the final product matches what’s been seen thus far.
Silent Hill 2 is still only listed on Steam as “coming soon,” but many observers are hopeful for a late 2024 release window.
