Mario remains a beloved figure in pop culture, one Nintendo won’t give up anytime soon. The popularity of the Super Mario RPG remake proves as much. If you’ve found yourself playing for hours, you might be shocked to learn there are many things you may not catch the first time around despite how linear most of the game is. Beyond hidden treasure, several missables in Super Mario RPG are worth tracking down.
8. Hidden Treasures
(Updated on September 25, 2024 – updated links and format)
Super Mario RPG features more than 30 hidden treasures throughout the game. There’s a good chance you won’t miss any. However, the chest in the Mushroom Castle foyer used to be missable in the original Super Mario RPG. However, the remake gives you a better opportunity to snag it and gain a Frog Coin. There are multiple Toads who wander now, so you can jump on any of them to reach the alcove.
7. Mallow’s Thought Peeks
Have you forgotten to check some of those Thought Peeks? Well, there’s no need to worry. This missable content is easily accessible at any time in Super Mario RPG. Head to Booster Pass and look for the sign pinned to the wall. There’s a hidden NPC in the nook you can jump down to near the sign. From this NPC, you can buy Thought Peeks with Frog Coins.
6. Grate Guy’s Casino
For those of you who played the original Super Mario RPG, you can rest easy knowing they kept the secret Grate Guy’s Casino location in the remake. You’ll head down one of the pipes in Bean Valley, defeat the enemies to unlock a secret passage, and gain access to the Casino.
There’s another step to this missable content as you can’t yet enter the Super Mario RPG location. You need the Bright Card, and that’s only initially gained by winning Knife Guy’s guessing game in Booster’s Tower.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get into Grate Guy’s Casino.
- Travel to Bean Valley.
You want to jump down the north pipe. Once there, defeat all the enemies.
- Unlock the secret passageway.
With the enemies defeated, head to the dead end. In the corner, jump three times and a platform will appear. Use this platform to reach the platform above. You’ll officially unlock the Casino.
- Win the Bright Card.
Travel to Booster’s Tower and win Knife Guy’s guessing game. You’ll play multiple rounds, and the final round win will earn you a Bright Card.
5. Booster’s Charm
Of all the Super Mario RPG missables, Booster’s Charm is one of the items you can’t backtrack to post-game. When playing the minigame at the end of the level that sees you hiding from Snifits, you must avoid detection. If you fail, you miss your chance of earning Booster’s Charm. It’s a handy item to have to give your stats a healthy boost.
4. The Feather
When you start the Nimbus Land castle, you’ll encounter the intimidating Dodo. It’ll inspect around you as Mario is disguised as a statue. The key to this missable item in Super Mario RPG is to avoid the Dodo’s pecking. Three times is all you need. From there, you’ll win the Feather, an item that will boost stats.
3. Troopa Pin
For this Super Mario RPG missable, you must be fast. In Monstro Town, you want to find Land’s End and scale the cliff. It’s not as simple as jumping on the flying shells. Instead, you want to move as fast as possible. Check your time at the top with Sergeant Fluter, and if you score under 11 seconds, you will win the Troopa Pin. It’s yet another item that will boost stats, improving your defense and attack.
2. Star Egg
The Star Egg is a reusable missable item in Super Mario RPG and rightfully so. With the amount of time you spend trying to win it, it should be reusable. Once you unlock Grate Guy’s Casino, you must speak with him until he asks you to play “Look the Other Way.” You need to win the 50/50 guessing minigame 100 times to win the Star Egg. It’s possible to come back and keep playing, and it doesn’t need to be 100 wins in a row. So, the biggest hurdle you have is patience.
1. Cameos
Super Mario RPG has two fun cameos that are missables: Link and Samus. There’s nothing major about their appearances, but they’re fun callbacks to other fan-favorite characters.
The Slumbering Hero
In Rose Town, after you defeat Bowyer, head to the Inn and take a nap. When you awaken, you will see Link sleeping in the other bed. You can’t speak to him though as he will instead enjoy his beauty sleep.
Samus Cameo
Go to the Mushroom Kingdom after you defeat Belome the second time. Inside the Inn, you can speak to one of the Toads who will tell you that their guest is resting. Head through the doors to discover their guest, Samus, lying in bed. Speak to her to learn she’s resting for Mother Brain.
And those are some of the big missables you may want to take a second look at in Super Mario RPG. They’re not detrimental to the plot or gameplay, but they serve as nice bonuses whether to boost your stats or serve as an amusing easter egg.
