Punky Brewster is headed back to the small screen. The wave of recent television revivals and remakes has officially set its sights on the 80s NBC Hit.
The original Punky Brewster ran for four seasons on NBC and starred Soleil Moon Frye as the show’s namesake. The story followed the wild antics of a young Brewster and her adoptive father, played by George Gaynes. The show was a monster hit and catapulted Frye to Hollywood superstardom.
As executives try to cash in on nostalgia, it seemed only a matter of time before someone brought Punky back for round two. This time around, our protagonist is all grown up and a single mother of three. As Brewster gets her life in order, she meets a young girl who reminds her of how she used to be.
Soleil Moon Frye will return to the role which made her famous and is named as one of the executive producers. The new show will again be a multi-camera sitcom and is being developed by UCP, a division of NBCU.
Following Frye’s stint on Punky Brewster, the actress appeared in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, and many more TV projects. The actress is also an accomplished author and has a plethora of voice-over work to her credits.
UCP is the studio behind Amazon’s Homecoming, Hulu’s The Act, Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, and shows such as Mr. Robot, Dirty John, The Magicians, The Purge, and more.
The recent revival game has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Whereas the Rosanne reboot (retooled as The Connors), was a monster hit. Murphy Brown only lasted a season. The Will & Grace revival was welcomed back with open arms, but it only made it to three seasons.
Punky Brewster herself inspired a generation of young girls. The show will forever be ingrained in popular culture, and if done right, the revival could strike rating’s gold again.
