Grammy-nominated recording artist Lana Del Rey from New York City, New York, has been revealed as the singer for the title song in the game 007 First Light by IO Interactive.
Her vocals are accompanied by music by composer David Arnold, merging together her iconic, melancholic sound with the suspenseful music that all but defined the term Spy Music. With this, she would be joining colleagues Adele, Sam Smith, and Billie Eilish in creating music for the English franchise.
The song, also titled First Light, has officially been released on all music platforms alongside a lyric video of the entire song. Interestingly, while the songs of James Bond films typically have to do with the motives or ideals of the particular film, this one does the same from a video game perspective.
In fact, the main chorus says, “All the fates just watching you, dying just to know whether you’ll play your life like a game.” This would be the first time that she would be featured in a video game outside of Just Dance and Let’s Sing, despite one of her breakout hits actually being titled Video Games.
Del Rey had previously written a theme song for the film Spectre, titled 24, though it was rejected in favor of Sam Smith’s Writing’s on the Wall. It seems that she was able to take that rejection and turn it into something to be used for a completely new venture for the franchise.
There is roughly a month left until the release of 007 First Light, detailing a completely original narrative that follows a young and inexperienced James Bond. The game will also feature original characters, one of which is Bawma, played by Grammy-winning singer and actor Lenny Kravitz.
The game will also be the first departure from the Daniel Craig version of the iconic M16 agent, paving a path towards a new generation of James Bond. Instead, the character is set to be voiced by Patrick Gibson of Dexter: Original Sin fame, where he portrays a young Dexter Morgan. 007 First Light will be the very first game he does voice and motion capture for.
007 First Light will launch on May 27 for the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
