According to the official Need For Speed Twitter account, Electronic Art’s new upcoming racing game will require an online connection. This was confirmed after a user voiced his concerns at the possibility of the game requiring players to be online at all times.

@DeanRheims NFS will require an online connection, but the benefits are nice. More variety and a more rewarding experience with friends.

The team later expanded upon this statement by explaining that the new Need for Speed will require an online connection even for single player, reason being that it allows them to “push the boundaries of the experience” that they can deliver. This decision was based upon the seamless online mode that was featured in Need For Speed Rivals. Despite this, players are not forced to play with friends in single player.

As expected the response to this announcement has not been very positive, with many users pointing out the mess that was SimCity‘s launch, and the possibility of a server shutdown rendering the game unplayable, to which the team replied:

NFS has an online requirement. Typically servers stay up until the number of players drops below 1%

Need for Speed

Need for Speed is currently being developed by Ghost Games, and is planned for release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC later this year. The new game will be a “full reboot” of the series, with huge focus on a “nocturnal, urban, car culture environment.”

More news will be announced at this years E3.
