Ahead of its September release, The Coalition decided to drop a new story trailer for Gears 5 during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The trailer focuses on Kait’s journey to discover her lineage while also teasing a major threat to mankind. You can check out that trailer down below:
A new look at Horde mode for Gears 5 was seen just before Gamescom Opening Night Live began but studio head Rod Fergusson touched on the big changes at the start of the event. In Horde, each character will have their own ultimate ability, including Jack. The helpful robot from the Gears campaigns can shoot out a dart at an enemy and take control of them for a short time. Jack will also be playable in the campaign as a third possible co-op partner, providing support to your teammates as they mow down their enemies with chainsaws.
Fergusson also discussed a new dynamic for Horde mode called “Power Taps”. Power is the source of currency in Horde mode and at the end of every 10 rounds, there will be these “Power Taps” scattered over the map. This creates a strategic dilemma for gamers. You can either branch out your base, risking being spread too thin, or stick with your current set-up and possibly lose out on a ton of resources.
But, “Power Taps” and ultimate abilities aren’t the only new additions to Horde. The game mode will also feature some members of Halo: Reach’s Noble Team, which is the 2nd big crossover for Gears 5. The Xbox title will also feature a crossover with Terminator: Dark Fate. The Halo: Reach character pack will be included in the Gears 5 Ultimate Edition as well as for any Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.
Gears 5 will release September 6th for those with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription and everyone else will be able to play the game September 10th.
