A variety of games were showcased during PlayStation’s State of Play event. The highly anticipated The Last of Us II finally got a release date. A MediEvil demo was released. However, amongst all the excitement Wattam, one of the stranger games there was shown.

Wattam I supposed to do?

Wattam is a game from Keita Takahashi, the creator of Katamari Damacy. In Wattam, you play as a cube with a face and mustache named Mayor. He wakes up alone on a planet after the planet self destructs. He’s alone until he climbs a tree and makes friends with a sleeping cloud.

The gameplay of Wattam can be described as a friendship simulator. As Mayor, you interact with objects in the world, bringing them to life.  Mayor then makes friends with the objects. The game is all about interaction and experimentation. The point is to stack characters on top of each other until you explode. The explosion is so exciting that it attracts more characters to you. Mayor needs to make friends with all these new characters.  Mayor’s interactions bring new characters to the world. The characters in the game will be named after your friends on PlayStation and Facebook. The game was originally shown at PlayStation Experience 2014. Takahashi designed the game to push the boundaries of what a game is, to thread the needle between open-ended and structured gameplay.

From one Fever Dream to Another

Katamari Damacy was a truly unique, and vibrant game. The game was all about rolling and gathering objects to a ball called a Katamari. The goal was to make the ball bigger. When the ball grows, it can pick up, and roll bigger objects, you roll it to one of gaming’s best soundtrack of all time. Katamari Damacy unique gameplay, colorful, crazy world and memorable soundtrack, made it a cult classic. Therefore, players should be excited about Wattam. Judging from the trailer Wattam will be another unique experience, with a great soundtrack.

Wattam is set to release sometime in December 2019. Until then enjoy some of Katamari Damacy’s music.
