Todd McFarlane will soon be the recipient of a Guinness World Record. Spawn 301 is about hit stands and make history.

Todd McFarlane

Spawn will become the longest-running creator-owned superhero comic book series. McFarlane has maintained control of the popular series for 27 years. The award is well deserved.

McFarlane had this to say about the honor:

“Any record that is based on longevity, is made on the backs of dozens of people. As much as I am proud to be receiving this award, I gratefully accept it on behalf of all those who helped me the past 27 years on this journey.”

The History of Spawn

Spawn was first published in 1992 by Image Comics and sold over 1.7 million copies. The fan favorite comic is now published in 12 languages and sold in 37 countries. The character has spawned (pun intended) an Emmy-winning animated show on HBO and modestly successful live-action movie.

Other properties have gone on for longer. Fans have to realize that this award is for the longest creator controlled. Most comics undergo ownership and creator changes throughout their lifespans.

New Movie

Todd McFarlane is currently working on a rebooted live-action movie. The new film will be completely different than the previous outing. McFarlane himself is directing the reboot. In an interview, McFarlane had this to say about the reboot (via Comic Book):

“In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn,”

“Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost.”

Spawn 301 comes out on October 9th, 2019. There is no release date yet for the rebooted live-action movie.
