A Halloween costume related to the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been spotted in the wild, and it is bizarre. Seemingly a relic of the film’s marketing prior to the planned redesign of Sonic following the backlash against the character’s original design, the Halloween costume allows both children and adults to dress up as everybody’s least favorite version of the lighting fast hedgehog.
I found it! The Sonic Movie costume from @RubiesCostumeCo! This is based on the pre-redesign Sonic, and only comes in boy’s sizes. I decided to use the mask and a couple of other Sonic items to recreate a certain meme 😅
You can find this at Walmart for $19.97. pic.twitter.com/yRVyM4jXwA— TreasureHuntingSonic (@sonictoyhunter) September 8, 2019
The live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was announced earlier this year, and just in case you missed it, the initial reaction to its first trailer was far from positive. Aside from the film looking very unlike the video game series it was based on, and the setting and characters not feeling familiar, the thing that people just could not stop talking about was the new design for Sonic himself. What was a character with a truly iconic Mickey Mouse-esque design of enduring classic nature, was now a freakish, animal-human hybrid with glassy eyes, bizarrely unnerving musculature, and overall uncanny quality to it that made the character look wholly unappealing.
The reaction to the design was so overwhelmingly negative that soon after the trailer’s debut it was announced that the film would be delayed from it’s initially planned November 2019 release in order to go back and redesign Sonic from the ground up to look more appealing. That initial design, however, apparently lingers on in this Halloween costume presumably put into production before the redesign was set in motion, and is now available for purchase thanks to the folks at Rubie’s Costume Co. The costume apparently has listings online with both Party City and Amazon, so if anybody would seriously like to buy this for their children or wear it themselves, now you know where to look.
If you somehow managed to avoid the trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie that set the entire internet on fire for weeks, you can watch it down below:
