Jurassic World dominated this past week as the film brought in a staggering $511.8M across all regions which beat out previous record holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which brought in $483.2M back in 2011. In all regions, the film opened to the number one spot and domestically the film was the second highest opening behind Marvel’s The Avengers. After this weekend, it has solidified star, Chris Pratt as a box office star after last years The Lego Movie & The Guardians of the Galaxy.

It has been fourteen (14) years since we last saw Jurassic Park in the form of Jurassic Park III which released in to mixed reception. That film finished with worldwide take with just $368M which made it the lowest grossing film of the series even when you take in this past weekend’s Jurassic World.

What made Jurassic World a box office hit is attributed to multiple factors. The film garnered viewers from all ranges including those who watched the original eight-teen (18) years ago who are now parents as well as younger audiences including those of those parents. The film was also received positively from critics which adds to the overall push. Chris Pratt was also the face of Jurassic World which also brought in a large following.

With Jurassic World having the biggest worldwide debut, it will be interesting to see where the film goes on from here. As we don’t have a similar Dinosaur film to take into consideration for box office growth. The film will reach $1B worldwide making it the third film this year to reach that feat. At the domestic box office, where the film opened to $204.6M, the film could bring in as much as Marvel’s The Avengers with around $600M. Though could the film break all expectations and beat out any of James Camerons box office masterpieces? Maybe, though unlikely due to hefty competition over the next month at the box office including next week’s Inside Out. Depending on how it continues to play in other regions, the film could reach $1.5B worldwide which would be enough to make it in the Top 5.

For the rest of the box office which held pretty well when you include that a film opened $200M+ includes Spy at the #2 spot with $16M to a total of $56.9M. The comedy starring Melissa McCarthy has been one of her top movies critically though due to the next couple weeks including a busy film schedule. The film will most likely finish shy of $100M with around $92M.

San Andreas dropped to #3 with $11M to a total of $119M. The disaster film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was no disaster and should be able to crawl to $150M by the end of its run. Insidious Chapter 3 took a big hit with a 68% drop with $7.3M to a total of $37M. Luckily the horror film costed around $5M and will finish north of $50M. At the #5 spot, Pitch Perfect 2 only dropped 20.8% with a take of $6M to a total of $170M.
