Although Doom Eternal was delayed to March 2020, a second trailer has dropped that gives us a closer look at the much-anticipated sequel. This new trailer focuses on the single-player campaign exclusively, but it reveals a lot about the upcoming release.
Developed by id Software, published by Bethesda Softworks, Doom Eternal is a sequel to the 2016 reboot, Doom. The core concept is the same as it’s predecessor: you must slaughter a massive amount of demons. You can shoot them with a variety of weapons, or you can get up close and personal and rip them in half.
The new trailer features, as one might expect, a lot of blood and fast-paced action. It shows off new abilities, weapons, and enemies. For example, Doom guy chops an enemy into three pieces with a massive, red sword. One weapon shot lightning at an enemy, causing them to combust. Basically, even after 27 years, there are still new ways to kill demons.
However, much of the trailer is concerned with the Doom Eternal’s plot. We get a closer look at Earth, its landscape changed from Hell’s invasion. The trailer is supported by dialogue, giving further details as to the context in which the story is taking place. Although we see a reference to a character from the previous game, we meet some new characters, most likely adversaries to defeat.
There is also a glimpse of Doom Guy’s hub area, a nice looking space station hovering above an unfamiliar Earth. The same tense heavy metal, composed by Mick Gordon, that fans will be familiar with plays in the background of the entire trailer.
The trailer doesn’t touch on Doom Eternal’s multiplayer components. The multiplayer features a unique mode called BATTLEMODE. In a match, two players take control of various kinds of demons. A single-player takes control of a slayer, and the two sides battle it out.
Regardless, Doom Eternal releases on March 20, 2020, on PlayStation 4,
