It looks like it’s soon curtains for AMC’s Better Call Saul.

The popular Breaking Bad prequel series is set to finish in 2021 with its sixth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Meanwhile, the fifth season starts airing on February 23rd.

Showrunner Peter Gould commented on the series’ closure on a panel at the Television Critics Association’s recent winter press tour. “From the beginning when we started [Better Call Saul], I think all our hopes and dreams were to be able to tell the whole story … and make it to be a complete story from beginning to end,” he said, “We’re going to try like hell to stick the landing of these 63 episodes.”

Breaking Bad is consistently praised for its “complete story” and the careful approach taken, forming the story from start to finish. Hopefully, Better Call Saul can pull off the same magic that made its sister series such a fondly-remembered hit.

Better Call Saul
El Camino, the Netflix Breaking Bad movie, was as widely-praised as Better Call Saul

The last new piece of BB-related media was El Camino, which was released on Netflix last October. Like Better Call Soul throughout its four seasons, the movie received wide critical acclaim drawing in 2.65 million viewers within its first day of release.

Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios, commented on the announced ending of Better Call Saul:

Greenlighting a prequel to one of the most iconic series in television history is one of the boldest swings that AMC has ever taken. But, thanks to the creative genius of [co-creators] Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, it has also been one of the most rewarding. It has been an absolute joy to collaborate with the extraordinarily talented team on Better Call Saul, which — five seasons in — continues to deliver some of the best storytelling and most beautifully nuanced performances on television today. We congratulate Vince, Peter, our producers, writers and cast on a remarkable run and look forward to sharing this final chapter with fans.
