The original Nier game was released in 2010 and immediately became a popular, if under-marketed, title for Playstation. Today Square Enix announced the long-awaited sequel.

The game doesn’t seem to officially have a title yet; so far it is only officially being referred to as “The Nier Project.” The trailer shown at E3 showed disappointingly little of the actual game content. Mostly it was just characters standing around looking morose in some very rich-looking environments.

This has led many journalists to speculate that a greater emphasis is being placed on the environments, however a lack of exact release date, title, and lack of gameplay footage suggests to me that this project is simply a long way from being finished, and it’s likely that the environments are just the only thing that are completed so far.

We do get a look at the new female protagonist, so that part is promising.

Also, this happened for some reason.

Japan: Always happy to provide the rest of the world with new, inexplicable nightmares.

The lack of gameplay footage is especially concerning, considering that–despite the story being fairly well-received–the original Nier was panned critically for lacking in many gameplay elements.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. No exact release date was given, but Nier”s sequel will be coming to PS4 sometime this Fall.
