It’s been far too long since we’ve had a Splinter Cell game, far, far too long. The last title in the series was Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which, believe it or not, came out in 2013. That’s 7 years ago. It’s a disgrace. There have been plenty of rumors over the years of a new Splinter Cell game, but unfortunately, that hasn’t come to fruition, as of yet. It’s high time that the world saw the return of Sam Fisher and if Variety is to be believed, we won’t have to wait long.

In an exclusive article, the site has reported that Netflix and Ubisoft have partnered to bring a Splinter Cell animated series to life. As per usual, you can file this under rumor, at least until it becomes official, especially as they haven’t revealed their sources or provided much information as of yet. They do go on to say that the series has received an order of 16 episodes, which will run over 2 seasons.

Splinter Cell

The Splinter Cell series is reportedly written by John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad, although, as of yet Netflix, Ubisoft, and reps for Kolstad have refused to comment. If these reports are to be believed it’s certainly exciting news for fans of the Splinter Cell series, even if initially I found myself skeptical of the idea. At first, I thought a live-action series would make more sense, but I realized what a fool I was being.

If Castlevania has taught us anything, it’s video games as an anime just work, plus, if Splinter Cell is animated it means that Michael Ironside can return to his iconic role, a fact alone that means everyone should be exited should these reports turn out to be true. A live-action show would be great and everything, but Sam Fisher without Michael Ironside is like Solid Snake without David Hayter, and as Metal Gear Solid V taught us, it’s not as good.

Let us know your thoughts on this potential series in the comments as we all wait for Ubisoft to get their act together.
