Microsoft has revealed the latest trailer forย Battletoads along with a new release date. The next entry in the classic beat ’em up series will release on August 20th, 2020. It will be available on Xbox One, Windows 10, Xbox Game Pass, and Steam. You can check out the new, action-packed trailer below:

Battletoads: Official Release Date Trailer

Dlala Studios is developing the reboot with support from the original series developer, Rare.ย Battletoadsย debuted during Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference, though it was little more than a logo tease. The E3 2019 trailer gave us a look at the gameplay and hand-drawn art style, which resembles a 90s cartoon. However, this trailer’s action is much more intense. It showcases the 3-player couch co-op as well as the different gameplay styles, including turbo-bike racing from the original games.

This trailer also gives us a bit more of the story. The Battletoads, called Zits, Rash, and Pimple, will team up with their nemesis, The Dark Queen. A more malevolent force called the Topians will require the enemies to band together. And the trailer is filled with all the zany dialogue one would expect from a 90s-centric action platformer.

The Origins ofย Battletoads

Rare developed the original Battletoads and released it for the NES in 1991. It became a hit thanks to its zany gameplay, with characters morphing their body parts into different objects to attack foes. The last official release was an arcade game in 1994, making this game the first entry in 26 years. The original game feature’s an extremely high difficulty level that has made it notorious among players. However, Microsoft was quick to note this new title will include different difficulty settings to make it more accessible to new players.

One of the Battletoads, Rash, also appeared in 2013’sย Killer Instinct. And all three appeared in the Xbox One version ofย Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. The first game and the arcade game can also be found inย Rare Replay.
