This is not the first time the epic card game Magic: the Gathering and the fantasy tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons have combined. Both owned by Wizards of the Coast, there have been two D&D campaign books centered on a Magic setting, Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica and Mythic Odysseys of Theros. But now the collaboration is going in the opposite direction, because Magic is going to release a set of D&D-themed cards.
Magic: the Gathering is known for complex rules, beautifully crafted cards, and a rich lore. It seems there are always new sets coming to store shelves, and it is as much fun to create themed decks as it is to play. And that richness will now dive into D&D lore. We know the setting to be in the Forgotten Realms, which much D&D history and campaigns come from including characters such as Drizzt Do’Urden and Minsc andย his space hamster Boo.
The set is titled “Adventures in the Forgotten Realms”. No details are released yet, so we can only speculate on what they will include. What mana will there be? Will it be the same or reworked for D&D? Will it include characters from their campaign books? Or notorious villains like the Mad Mage? Magic cards often have themes after the gods in the world, so will it include well-known gods like Lolth and Moradin? Will we get to see legendary artifacts and weapons in card form?
Fans of both will have to wait until 2021 to find out. There is a release schedule for next year and the Dungeons & Dragons set is not coming until Q3, or around Autumn. With the deep history of D&D, varieties of people and monsters, and a multitude of geography, there certainly will be plenty for Magic: the Gathering to choose from when determining their cards.
