The CW has announced that Supergirl will end after its sixth season, which is set to air sometime in 2021.
If you remember, Supergirl didn’t get its start on The CW. Instead, the series initially began over on CBS in 2015. The Flash star Grant Gustin even appeared on a season 1 episode titled “Worlds Finest” that saw the first of many crossovers between Gustin’s Barry Allen and Melissa Benoist’s Kara Danvers. After its first season, Supergirl was moved to The CW and became an integral fixture in the network’s Arrowverse.
Why Is Supergirl Ending Now?
Per Deadline, we may know why the long-time superhero show is coming to an end so abruptly. Although Supergirl already planned to start production later in the year due to Benoist’s pregnancy, the COVID-19 pandemic still had a major impact. Along with this, Supergirl has seen a decline in ratings. It’s said that the producers, the network, and Benoist all agreed that now was the time to end the series due to those reasons.
When Will The Crew Start Filming Season 6?
So, Supergirl will end with a 20-episode final season. But, when will the show start shooting? According to Deadline, production on season 6 could begin as soon as next week, depending on a potential deal with the local unions over SAG’s testing guidelines. If this deal does happen, Benoist will reportedly join production at a later date and the crew will shoot around her scenes.
Whether you love the show or hate it, this is a major blow to CW’s Arrowverse. For a long time, Green Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl were perceived as the Arrowverse’s trinity. Now, there’s only one character left. It’ll be interesting to see how long The Flash will continue to run for and if The CW can manage to revamp its DCTV universe with shows like Legends of Tomorrow, Superman and Lois, Black Lightning, and Batwoman.
