After many rumors swirled about on the internet, the existence of a Mass Effect trilogy remaster has finally been made official. Today on N7 Day, BioWare announced that Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in spring 2021. And yes, the game will support forward compatibility and “targeted enhancements” on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Over on the BioWare blog, BioWare general manager Casey Hudson said that they would share more information about the game later in the new year.

When it’s released, Mass Effect Legendary Edition will include all of the single-player base contents as well as DLCs from the trilogy, including promo weapons, armors, and packs. The graphics quality of the Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 remaster will also be optimized for 4k ultra-high-definition visual.

In the blog, Hudson specifically stated that Mass Effect Legendary Edition is not a “remake” of the original titles. With that in mind, don’t expect a massive gameplay (or story) overhaul — especially for Mass Effect 1. Personally, I don’t have a problem with the first game, and it is actually my favorite out of the three, but most people might not be able to withstand its aged, janky half-RPG-half-shooter mechanics.
”For many months now, our team at BioWare has been hard at work updating the textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features of three enormous games. Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form. It’s been amazing to see the adventures of Commander Shepard take on new life in super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements. As game developers, we always hope that our games will transcend their original platforms. Having the opportunity to remaster the trilogy means that the fruits of a decade of our work will live on, and will be experienced better and clearer than ever before.”
Hudson closed his post by saying that the team is also currently “envisioning the next chapter” of the Mass Effect universe. We can expect a new game announcement next year, then. Ready to jump into Shepard’s boots and save the galaxy with your ragtag group again in Mass Effect Legendary Edition? Let me know what you think of this remaster in the comments below.
