The upcoming PlayStation 5 launch title Sackboy: A Big Adventure will see the return of Sony’s cutest mascot hero. The title promises fun, craft-inspired levels that take full advantage of the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback capabilities. Developer Sumo Digital has built some of these levels entirely around co-op. But there’s now a slight catch for players planning on picking it up at launch.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sumo Digital stated that it had pushed online co-op back until later this year. It will be added via a patch by the end of 2020, though no definitive date was given. However, 2-4 players can still enjoy the game through offline couch co-op. So this news won’t affect players who planned on playing Sackboy: A Big Adventure with siblings or local friends.

We’ve made the difficult decision to delay the full online multiplayer functionality within Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The team have been working hard to ensure that online is the very best experience it can be for players and we just need a little more time to get it right so you can enjoy it to the fullest with your friends and family.”

Sackboy Multiplayer

The planned patch for Sackboy won’t just add online functionality. It will also add online crossplay between PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 players. Additionally, it will allow save transfers from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is one of many games that will let players upgrade to the next-gen version at no extra cost.

The titular Sackboy first appeared in 2008’s LittleBigPlanet. The game spawned several sequels and spin-offs, including its own kart racing game. But we haven’t heard from the series since 2014’s LittleBigPlanet 3. Everything that Sumo Digital and Sony have shown about Sackboy, from its gameplay to its adorable levels, looks to showcase what fans have come to expect and enjoy from the series.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure releases on November 12th for PlayStation 4 and alongside the PlayStation 5.
