Despite nothing actually being released yet, Zack Snyder‘s Army of the Dead is shaping up to be a killer zombie franchise. Snyder recently announced that its prequel, aptly titled Army of the Dead: The Prequel, has already finished filming!
This isn’t Snyder’s first foray into the undead genre. In fact, in 2004, he directed a rather successful reimagining of George A. Romero’s classic Dawn of the Dead. Unlike Romero’s classic slow, lingering zombies, Snyder’s version was faster and much more intense. We can expect this style to continue into his newest zombie flick. It’s worth noting that his return to undead action with Army of the Dead is not a sequel to his Dawn of the Dead, but it is instead described to be more of a spiritual successor.
Even though Army of the Dead isn’t even out yet, a prequel movie directed by Matthias Schweighöfer — who will also reprise his role of Ludwig Deiter — has already finished filming. You might see a familiar face from Game of Thrones with Nathalie Emmanuel leading the cast. Also in the cast is Schweighöfer, Guz Khan, Stuart Martin, and Ruby O Fee.
In celebration of the prequel getting to this milestone, Zack Snyder took to Twitter to confirm the news:
That’s a wrap on Army of the Dead: The Prequel. Thanks to all the cast & crew and Netflix #armyofthedead #aotd pic.twitter.com/GvwAKVyjse

Zack Snyder has been working on Army of the Dead since 2007, back when it was in development at Warner. Bros. The movie boasts a stellar cast, including Dave Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Samantha Win, Rich Cetrone, and Garrett Dillahunt. The plot will apparently follow the group as they travel to Vegas to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Netflix picked up the project after things slowed down. They loved the idea so much that they also greenlit the prequel and even an anime spinoff.
Army of the Dead will premiere on Netflix in 2021. There is currently no word on when the prequel will release.
