KOTOR with no Malak?
This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, or KOTOR for short, is apparently being rebooted by Aspyr Media. How do we know? Well, there’s a lot of talk going around about a remake, a remaster, etc. Everybody seems to be pointing to this one thread at Reset Era, where Jason Schreier comments: “Hmm!” – on an Embracer Group quote cited by one of the users. In my opinion, this doesn’t mean much. But let’s look at the facts.

KOTOR Facts Must Support a KOTOR Theory

Aspyr Media worked on KOTOR ports in the past. Disney acquired Star Wars back in 2012. Just recently, Disney revived Lucasfilm Games. Now, all Star Wars games will be under the umbrella of Lucasfilm Games. Except for movies and Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, everything before 2014 seems to be not canon. We now know that there’s a new KOTOR game in development. And on top of all that, there are too many rumors of a KOTOR remake/remaster.

Aspyr Media has a history with KOTOR.

We can’t forget that IP ownership and control is important to Disney. With that in mind, old KOTOR games can see the light of day only if they are reimagined. KOTOR needs to mesh well with the now established canon timeline. Including the all-new High Republic. A remaster/remake can’t do that. Only appropriation can do that. So, the only logical conclusion is, if the old KOTOR games are having a comeback story, it’s a comeback story full of reimagining. In short, a reboot.

This also allows for more creative freedom with the new KOTOR title. According to Jason Schreier, “we’ll never guess which studio is in charge of this project” as reported in this Eurogamer article. Whoever it is, this is what we believe are some of the things they need to do with the game.

None of this is still confirmed. Everything comes down to speculation. But we find this to be the most plausible scenario. What do you think? Do you agree with our prediction? Let us know in the comments below.
