Terraria Co-Creator Cancels Google Stadia Version

Terraria, Google Stadia
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information.

Fans who had been supporting the life of Terraria, a 2D building and adventure game – it would be very disingenuous calling it a 2D Minecraft despite the apparent comparisons – and were perhaps looking forward to it coming out on Google Stadia will be left understandably disappointed. In a rant-filled thread on Twitter, co-creator Andrew Spinks (AKA Demilogic) announced that the Stadia version would no longer come out, and any future business with Google would be out of the question going forward.

I absolutely have not done anything to violate your terms of service, so I can take this no other way than you deciding to burn this bridge. Consider it burned. #Terraria for @GoogleStadia is canceled. My company will no longer support any of your platforms moving forward.

— Redigit๐ŸŒณ (@Demilogic) February 8, 2021

The decision comes after Spinks was locked out of his Google account in January for seemingly no reason, denying him access to many Google services that have become commonplace to many users, such as YouTube and Gmail. Spare a thought, as he also heartbreakingly revealed that he was partway through Lord of the Rings, and the account lock has left him unable to finish the much-revered fantasy epic. In all seriousness, losing access to an account with a strong reliance on business correspondence is a devastating blow, and there hasn’t been a clear response from Google as to what the reason has been to lock Spinks out of his account.

Terraria, Stadia

Terraria, at least at the time of writing, is still up on the Google Play Store, although as it is published by 505 Games, it stands to reason that it wouldn’t have been affected by account locks anyway.

This series of events doesn’t come at a great time for Google. They recently announced that they would be shutting down their first-party operations at Google Stadia, as they would close down Stadia Games and Entertainment studios in Montreal and Los Angeles before even a full year had passed since they were opened, and either had the chance to even announce a game.

Terraria meanwhile, has gone from strength to strength, and with its final update released last year, completes a nine-year journey across multiple platforms and content additions, and has bowed out with a game that has proven worthy of all the praise it has garnered over that journey.

In the end though, what are your thoughts on Terraria not coming to Google Stadia? Any chance of the company repairing things with the Terraria developer? Let us know in the comments below.
